In 1974, the Irish Department of Education organised an open architectural ideas competition for the design of a new type of building – a ‘community school’.
Peter & Mary Doyle
Peter studied at University College Dublin and the Illinois Institute of Technology, graduating with a Master’s Degree in Architectural Science in 1965. Worked with Ludwig Mies van der Rohe before returning to Dublin to work in the office of Michael Scott. Mary, his wife, also worked in Scott’s office.
Established Peter and Mary Doyle Architects in 1972, and their work received numerous awards, including the Gold Medal of the RIAI for Birr Community College. Peter died in 1995, while Mary died in 2015.
