This present building replaces an earlier corn exchange built in 1753.

Less elaborate than the wholesale vegetable market across the street,

Unbuilt competition entry for a new town hall.
Recently restored, the markets contain a working fish market and a bric-a-brac market of stalls and traders.
After the First World War, two storeys were added to the building,
