Largely completed as illustrated, although some of the more decorative elements such as the plaque on the gable and the cupola were never finished.
In 1897 philanthropist and businessman Andrew Carnegie pledged £2,500 to build a new library in the town,
Unsuccessful entry for a competition for a new public library for Limerick.
The Carnegie grant was awarded in 1901,
