Castlerea was established as part of the system of district mental hospitals in 1939 as a Psychiatric Hospital annex to St Bridget’s Hospital in Ballinasloe.

The former St. Senan’s Hospital was built by the Government as a hotel accommodation for passengers travelling on the flying boats which passed through Foynes while en-route to America and Continental Europe.

In 1947, Waterford County Council acquired Ardkeen House and 50 acres of surrounding land.
The new sanatorium at Ballyowen was formally handed over on 28th April 1952.
Part of the modernisation of the Irish healthcare system in the 1950s when larger specialised hospitals were constructed including sanatoriums and orthopedic units.
Now known as Galvia Hospital,
Commissioned to replace the old Cork Street Fever Hospital.
Carlow did not get a County Hospital in the 1920s or 1930s when many counties were constructing new hospitals replacing old Victorian infirmaries.
