High Street Belfast

Previously known as Front Street but renamed to act as Belfast’s foremost street, in keeping with the trend of the time across the UK.

1665 – Market House, High Street, Belfast, Co. Antrim

Belfast’s first market house of 1665 was located at the corner of High Street next to Cornmarket. According to an 1823 published history of Belfast,

1812 – St. George’s, High Street, Belfast

Architect: John Bowden

Described in The Dublin Penny Journal, Views in Belfast (1833), as “Situated in High-street, and erected in the years 1811-12,

1881 – St. George’s Building, 37-41 High Street, Belfast

Architect: Thomas Jackson & Sons

Originally built as a commercial building with several units and a large hall for public meetings.

1897 – Former National Bank, 62-68 High Street, Belfast

Architect: William Batt

The National Bank Ltd, a bank founded by Daniel O’Connell in 1835 had branches in Ireland and Britain.

1900 – Arnott & Co., Bridge St., Belfast

Architect: J.J. Phillips & Son

Department store constructed between 1897-1900, on the corner of Bridge and High Street. The store was originally designed by Thomas Jackson and built 1857 – 1858,
