Department of Public Works (Canada)

The Department of Public Works was based in Ottawa and took responsibility for designing Government buildings across Canada including armouries, post offices, custom buildings and others as needed.

Chief Architects of the department were Thomas Seaton Scott (1826-1895), Thomas Fuller (1823-1898), David Ewart (1841-1921), E.L. Horwood (1868–1957), Richard C. Wright (1860–1927), and Thomas W. Fuller (1865-1951).

Manitoba’s first Legislature building was built facing Kennedy Street,

Government House was constructed between 1889-91 and was built on a grand scale as a result of the federal government’s desire to have an imposing symbol of its authority in the North-West Territories.
