Although most of the church was built as designed by Wheeler,
The first church on the site was probably built in the eighth century in wood.
In 1883, a Methodist (later United) church was designed by Winnipeg architect James Chisholm and built at the corner of Ellice Avenue and Notre Dame Avenue.
