The original Castlecomer House, the family seat of the Wandesfordes, was built in 1638. It was burned down during the battle of Castlecomer in 1798.

Illustrated as designed and built by William Robertson, the domestic wing developed structural problems and soon had to be rebuilt.
The foundation stone for the present church was laid on the 16th August 1844 by Father Joseph Butler P.P.
