Archibald & Schofield

A collaborative partnership of John Smith Archibald (1872–1934) and John Schofield (1883-1971). They designed Canadian National Hotels for the Canadian National Railway. Born and educated in Scotland, Archibald emigrated to Canada in 1893. John Schofield immigrated to Canada from Ireland in the early 1900s. In 1907, he became the draftsman for the Canadian Northern Railway in Winnipeg. After the Canadian National Railway formed in 1920, he became their main architect based in Montreal. Archibald’s skill and expertise in hotel design, led the Canadian National Railways Co. to commission Archibald to execute five major landmark works in Vancouver, Halifax, Saskatoon, Murray Bay, and in Ottawa. In his role as Chief Architect for CNR, Schofield had considerable input.
