Between 1878 and 1880, Seà±or Manuel Vicens i Montaner commissioned Gaudí to build a house on the lot that he inherited from his mother in 1877.
Palau Güell, or Guell Palace, was the first of many commissions that Antoni Gaudí received from Eusebi Güell i Bacigalupi (1846-1918) a leading industrialist who later became the Count of Güell.

Gaudí’s patron Eusebi Güell wished to develop a garden city of around fifty houses here and commissioned Gaudi to work on the project.
