1907 Departmental & Justice Buildings Ottawa Competition

The first prize of $8,000 was awarded to Edward & W.S. Maxwell, of Montreal; second, $4,000, Darling & Pearson, Toronto; third, $2,000, Saxe & Archibald, Montreal; fourth, $1,000, Brown & Vallance, Montreal.

The judging committee was composed of Mr. D. Ewart, chief architect of the Public Works Department, Ottawa, President Edmund Burke of the Ontario Architects’ Association, and President Chausse, of the Quebee Architects’ Association. In judging considerations of architectural beauty, relative cost, allocation and economy of office space and general suitability of design to the needs of the service were made the basis of award. No fixed cost was named in the conditions of the competition, but a building costing about three millions was the desideratum.
