1956 – St. Colman’s High School, Strabane, Co. Tyrone
Architect: Corr & McCormick
The school was built in the mid 1950s as a result of the education act of 1947, which set out to modernise the aging educational fabric of Northern Ireland. Like many modernist buildings across Ireland, this vein of softer modernist building featured more socially acceptable design features including a shallow pitched roof (often these were copper clad), and some local stone on a portion of the facade. Originally a boy’s school, later admitted girls and was renamed Holy Cross, closed in 2005. Demolished 2008.
