1876 – St Helens Town Hall, Lancashire
Constructed after a fire badly damaged the previous townhall on the site. The new town hall, which was designed in the Victorian style by Liverpool architect Henry Summer, has a long asymmetrical frontage of twenty bays. The central section of five bays has a double-height stone portico with piers on the ground floor supporting paired Corinthian columns on the first floor and an arch with a pediment above. The clock tower is on the left of this central section. The western portion of the building contained a court room and police station; there was also a fire brigade depot, a large fire engine house being provided under the assembly rooms. Depicted prior to a fire which destroyed the steeple.
