14th C – Puente de San Martin, Toledo, Spain

A bridge located to the West of the city, it was built in the middle of the 14th Century. Destroyed during the war between the brothers Pedro I and Enrique II, it was rebuilt on the orders of bishop Pedro Tenorio. It consists of five pointed arches on strong pillars and has two fortified towers at each end. The entrance to the city is watched over by a large imperial coat of arms with its corresponding seated monarchs. The interior tower is very misshapen after additions and later renovations during the reign of Carlos II, while the exterior still has its ribbed vaulting and peacock and horseshoe arches. It was declared a National Monument in 1921.
