1953 – Pediatric Unit, Rotunda Hospital, Dublin
A temporary prefabricated construction on what was left of the Rotunda gardens, and now the site of the Garden of Remembrance. Designed for the treatment of young children up to six months of age.
“The central block houses the administration, district milk bank, and surgery. Each of the two wings provides a ward unit of 15 isolation cubicles. The east wing also contains living quarters for two resident doctors. The whole unit is light, airy, and informal. It is far removed from the institutional dreariness associated with hospitals in the past. The construction, apart from the concrete slab foundations and site works, is dry. A light steel frame supports Belfast roof trusses. The walls are built of pre-fabricated timber panels bolted to the frame. Steel purloins carry wood wool slabs and heating is by means of a calorifiers from the main hospital system.” Architectural Survey 1953.
