One of the chain of Mooney’s bars across the city – this was known as The Abbey Mooney. Rebuilt by McDonnell & Dixon after the 1916 Rising. Badly damaged by fire in 1976, Now part of the financial institution next door – but the original name can still be seen incised into the granite walls above the street level triumphal archway and below the two-tier canted oriel window. Like many of McDonnell & Dixon’s buildings over the period, it featured large pilasters usually with some relief decoration. No.2 Abbey Street alongside, which was later expanded into by the pub, was designed by William Mitchell & Sons.
