Mountford, Edward William (1855-1908)

English architect who designed several Gothic Revival churches, but is best known for his public buildings, including the Free Renaissance-style Sheffield Town Hall (1890-7) with elements culled from Spain, France, England, and The Netherlands), and the Gibbs Revival-style Lancaster Town Hall (1907) with Thomas Geoffrey Lucas (1872-1947)). He designed the Northampton Institute, Finsbury, London (1893-6), again in a Free Renaissance style. His masterwork The Central Criminal Court, Old Bailey, London (1900-7), is in a grandly Edwardian Baroque style, with a cupola derived from the work of Wren.
