I agree – I know plenty of Danes and Swedes and they have a great sense of humour….just a little different from ours. More importantly they also know how to order their society properly! Their transport works! Their roads are not congested with boy racers! They dont live in very expensive, crap cardboard houses! And they dont foul their country with litter and waste!

Hmmm all very Michael Flatulence by the sounds of it. A bit of a ranter is he.

Still…. if tis was the Victorian era and someone had bought a Regency property and decided to remodel it to Victorian taste would they have attracted this much trouble? And would we not now be viewing it as being of architectural merit in its own right.

I dont know enough about the house really to comment but shouldnt Michael be able to add to a building he owns and which is not of any public interest?

Re Amiens Street – I think you mean the traffic monitoring camera that were put up earlier this year. They are all over the place. And yes they are ugly and obtrusive.

In general I think the placing of pole and pylons is getting out of control in the city. There seems to be no thought or consitancy about it at all. The fiasco of the new traffic management system of a couple of months ago hides the fact that this was yet another selection of road signs added to our already crowded streets.

Building mounted cables should be the norm for the Luas project and CCTV for that matter.

Yes it is…. this is a Republic – not a monarchy or a semi monarchy (like France, USA). Head of State should get a residence but the Head of Givernment is just an ordinary Joe Soap like the rest of us.

Its would cost a fortune to remove to the Old Parliament House and it is totally unrealistic when the current site is adequate.
As for Leinster House as a des res for Bertie. Are you mad! Haven’t they all got enough at present – Government Buildings, Farmleigh, the Aras. What wrong with him having to be on the slippery property pole like everyone else. Why does he need an official residence?

Also on the subject of Leinster House – when are they going to get rid of that tarmac sprawl on the Lawn. Why all these parking spaces. havent they heard of the Park ‘n Ride, QBCs, Luas line, Metro lines, and fantastic high speed Intercity rail links that have been developed since 1998 under the NDP!

GregF I sometimes worry that you might get an aneurism one of these days!!

I cant believe that they cant just pass byelaws to stipulate what kind of permises can exist on O’Connell Street.

The Sky-tower idea is a bit overdone. They have them in Melbourne, Sydney, Toronto, Vancover, Seattle….etc It seems like a formulaic way of adding something distinctive to the city skyline.
Perhaps a way forward would be to revamp Liberty Hall – the top floor could incorporate the elements like restaurants and viewing platforms and new cladding and glazing could give the building a more dramatic look. Actually, I am amazed SIPTU have never considered it publically. Mind you they are not exactly the most farsighted of building owners…the foyer is enough to prove that.

No way! The square is a Victorian square….if anything it should be restored to its 1900 state. Modern lamps (and street furniture) would look completely out of place. The reason Merrion, Fitzwilliam and Mountjoy Squares look as effective as they do is because they are more or less totally intact. They have already made enough architectural mistakes on Stephen’s Green (like Dept of Justice and its many contemporaries).
Mind you I am note sure what the Luas side will look like…I hope it is done sensitively to the other sides. No big ugly steel girders to hold cables.

I remember these granite bollards with chains. I think the very reason for removing them was to allow people access to their cars. I dont think you should be allowed park around the Green.

Dreadful…. and I am sure there are many more EBS’s to tell of. The Irish Press, the collection of buildings on the site oif the old Theatre Royal, the Pennys building on O’Connell Street (used to be the Capitol Theatre I think)

Its such a struggle to get anybody to think outside the box for a change, isnt it!

I wrote to Anne Graham, the Project Manager for the O’Connell St IAP, exprerssing my support for replacing the trees. Not that it will do any good… but at least it wil make a change from all the complaints she will be receiving.

The old lampstands weren’t originals by the way. They were probably put in place in the 70s or early 80s. Originally St Stephen Green had the large column lamps that you see around Merrion Square

Its the OPW who are renovating the square not the Corpo but I had hoped they would be a bit more imagnative.
I hate those bland lampstands….cant they stretch their designing skills a little. Even the glass globe-style lamps are crap. They’re too fragile and are just screaming out to be smashed.

wow – what an interesting picture. Really puts the Millenium Mall into perspective doesn’t it. To think that’s the main street of the city…it looks like a slum.

    God isnt Dublin grey!

I thought we were rolling in it? Didnt McCreevy say we were one of the wealthiest countries ever in the whole history of the world all because of his excellent management of the ecomony and that all those gobshites in Europe who didnt know a good thing when they saw it could take a jump….

    I wonder what happened….

Still at least we’ll have the Port Tunnel – thats true. And a lovely new terminal at Dublin Airport courtsey of that great Irish philanthropist, Michael O’Leary. Oh and a C ring road around Dublin (never mind that auld castle)

I would argue that its not the height of buildings but the quality. I think Dublin is unique with its low rise skyline and I would be wary of changing that drastically just for the sake of change. At the end of the day it should our efforts should be concentrated on making what we see at streetlevel better.

By the way Shane – where is Barlett?

This has to go down as one of the most divisive threads yet strted on this forum. And frankly I am utterly amazed that peoples feelings can run so high over some trees. To add my two bits worth, I reckon the trees should go and that the regeneration plan should move forwad full steam ahead.
Reemeber when the central mall was repaved in 1988 and (yet more) trees were added in no particular planned fashion. Not a peep from people back then! I really fail to see why this is being made into such a huge issue. I do think the Greens have a case to answer – because after all Ciaran Cuffe YOU have the privilege of being a member of the city council and having a direct imput into the whole O’Connell St scheme…unlike the ordinary Joe Soaps here on Archeire! The time to have expressed you views was when the plan was being formulated all those many moons ago. Not now when all it serves is to get your party’s name mentioned. And they wonder why people are cynical of politics! As for Marion jumping on the bandwagon…!

Lastly, I think we are very lucky (thank you Paul and all contributors) to have this forum to share views and at least know that there are others out there (non-architects included) who share a desire to see an improved city. Lets not bugger it up with slagging matches!

Now hand me my chain saw…..
