There were comments about the fact that while the DCC is committed to attracting a higher class of business to the street, the strength of their commitment is in question. The former Bank of Ireland building was the case in point. While the IAP specified a high profile use, what we got (or are getting) is a bookies!
I think you should be able to ban certain types of business from areas. For example a limit on the number of Centra/ Spars would be welcome. There is a glut of these tacky shops on the street. Ditto the fastfood emporiums.

A masterplan does exist….two actually. One is called the Dublin Development Plan, which is DCC driven and focuses mainly on planning and development. The other is the City of Possibilities, a DCC plan launched last year focusing on the social aspects of the city.

Waterford, that one in Kerry that Dick Spring loved, isn’t their one on the Aran Islands and in Donegal, they are probably including the North as well.

Here, here… I am a Northsider and proud of it. And there are plenty of fantastic features on the Northside. There are also plenty of very nice areas as well. And surprise surprise just like our wealthier brethern down south there are plenty of crumby areas and lots of room for improvement.

Me too! A breathe of fresh air in the staid corridors of Leinster House.

Seamus was impressed by him too and is now talking up a Critical Infrastructure Bill to speed up the snail pace of NDP projects.

In that case who not just put the DART undergorund from the Tolka to just beyond Pearse Street. Reopen the Phoenix tunnel and use the freed-up platforms at Connolly. Perhaps expand into the Docklands if more space is needed. Dismantle the Loop Line…. hurray! The sale of land currently used by rail lines would part fund the project.

Connolly DART is a disgrace anyway…. that long walk from Platform to exit is a joke. It would be much better develop an underground interchange for DART, LUAS and bus under Connolly and Busaras.

I agree, there seems to be a lot of thin skins on th site at the moment.,..everyone is getting very bad tempered. Naz, you’re right, everyone has the right to an opinion and everyone has the right to disagree with someones opinion.

Also all these threads go way back so it might be a good thing to read whats goen before or use the search facility. It does seem that the same questions can get asked over and over again.

This is all getting very personal and hot tempered… but I have to agree with the point that the bridge is not meant to be climbed. If people choose to put their safety at risk by climbing it then it is a social issue not a design issue. And the fact that they are some one little darlings makes no odds – they shouldn’t be ‘interacting’ with the bridge in this way.

Its like that other favourite topic…. Le Spire. The spire can be grafittied…. if people choose they can walk up to it and spray it with paint. But they should not. Its not a design issue if they do, its a social issue as in lack of respect for one’s surrounding.

Also hate that inner city/ outer city class crap… a scumbag is a scumbag whether he lives in town or in D4.

Thats the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard! What you are suggesting is that we shouldn’t blame kids for ‘interacting with their environment’ …even if this interaction involves suspending themselves off a slippery metal girder 20ft over a busy roadway!

The point has been made: when does the designers responsibility to the surroundings and possible uses of his/her design stop. The possible uses of a design could be considered ad infinitum but eventually you have to stop. People should not be climbing this bridge and if they do and they get hurt then tough! Serves them right.

I think this is very probable. Hands off our bridge I say….

If MOST people would not dream of climbing the bridge (for whatever reasons) then the design of the bridge does not ‘invite and accommodate climbing’. Its simply that, as with most low level structures, the bridge can be climbed.

I think you are wrong … most people wouldn’t dream of climbing the bridge and I am sure that the designer would be conscious of this and therefore would not need to factor this into his design.

However, some people will climb something regardless of how much the design dissuades them.

A funny related story was an incident about 6 weeks ago where some moron went for a swim (no doubt spurred on by sa,pling the delights fo one of our superpubs) and was left clinging onto the support struts pf the Boardwalk. No doubt he contributed towards the cost of the subsequent rescue operation!

I was going to post something along similar lines but …. fuck it! let the little shits play on the bridge and see what happens!

Good examples of alley-ways with a new lease of life are Dame Lane and Castle Lane both off Sth George Street. Smart new paving and better lighting has managed to attract busnesses and people and made for an interesting little thoroughfare.

Not an alley-way but a street with that feel is Sackville Place beside Clerys. Poor old street. Its a right dump but surprisingly it has quite a high footfall. It is in dire need of some development. That DCC Library has to go first and something needs to be done about Malborough Street. Isn’t Malborough St just the sadest street in the city. There are so many excellent features on it: D of Education, Abbey, a Georgain terrace, etc and yet time has passed it by. Nothing to do with the Irish Life Centre ripping the soul out of it I’m sure.

There is definately a lot of potential in this area.. a lot of wasted buildings. Even Clarendon St and Sth William St are less than they could be

…when Dunnes do up the other side of the street….when indeed?

Georges Arcade would make a great food market. There is a good retail mix at the moment but I think they would make a lot more of the building if they specialised.

I was recently in Milan – a fab city with some stunning architecture. Top of the list has to be The Galleries just off the piazza del Duomo. Huge vaulting ceilngs and monumental architecture….. the ultimate arcade!
