I thought it was the dirt of it that was the problem…. and the base….. and the lighting (or lack of)… and the beacon on top and halfway down…. and the ‘DNA-like’ pattern around the lower section….

Point taken Alan we shall learn to love it…!

Wasn’t that a result of an excellent idea by the city fathers to build a motorway through here! The Inner Relief Route I think it was called.

Kingsbridge (now Heuston Station) !!! How old are you…!

A city centre ‘hopper’ service… better still a free city centre hopper service would be ideal. A great way of encourageing people not to drive in or through the city centre and thus free up a little of that city centre congestion. Perhaps a number of circular route that would take shoppers, tourists, etc around with ease.

Hmm Im not so sure… I think it is possible to improve on the Spike as is. I like the pool of water at the base idea…. or at least the original polished black marble base. And all it needs is a clean to get rid of the discolouration. I never expected it to look like the sheer join-free surface depicted on the drawings (I have yet to see structure look as it is suggested on the drawings!) but there must be a way of dealing with surface to at least improve its appearance.

Poor old Spike… it seems to have been a wasted opportunity. I reckon the DCC will cop on to this eventally though and be forced to spend yet more money bringing the Spire up to the standard originally expected… probably once the paving is completed. A waste of money!

Why do you think the Spire has turned out to be so dissappointing…. bad project management, too many fingers in the pie?

I once asked the City Council and was told that ‘Dublin didn’t have a tradition of fountains’ …. whatever that means. Also DCC say they do not own/are not responsible for the David fountain – its the OPW. OPW says its Duchas. Duchas say its not them it DCC. Here we go round the mulberry bush…

I am quite sure you could have high density housing and provide a grassy play area as well as more formal landscaped areas for adults to enjoy. Seeing the related thread about the Phoenix Park Racecourse site getting ready to become the latest mock-Tudor ‘stunning’ development, I can;t help but wonder why we can’t find a middle way between these two extremes: low density suburban sprawl with plenty of gardens (front and back) and parkland and higher density blocks with nothing except an overly formal, impractical landscaped area.

Has anyone else noticed how strangely similar the Winkers (Germany) and Metronometric (Ireland) entries are??

I though the same thing…. perhaps its a nod to the docklands cranes?

Ithink there are a couple of much better choices than the winning entry which I agree looks very Canary Wharf-like. I wonder how long the roof-top garden will last once its realised how much office space its taking up (Mr Leibeskind could advise)

Some have worked quite well…. Muckross House in Kilarney springs to mind, or Newbridge House. But my local attraction is the Casino Marino which left me quite underwhelmed when I last visited. It was in dire need to a lick of paint. There are very few visitors and the staff just seem to be bored rigid, and the OPW made a balls of the ground when they were sold off for housing years ago. Its a real shame.

    Broadstone rail plan gains support

THE proposal by Cabra Community Council to re-establish the Broadstone railway line has received the support of the Dublin Institute of Technology, Maynooth College and the area committee of Dublin City Council.

CCC proposes the redevelopment of the old Broadstone Line from Cabra to Broadstone to run as part of the Maynooth-Dublin suburban service.

The Maynooth-Dublin line can cater for eight trains per hour peak time but because of signal congestion in Connolly, there are only two trains per hour.

Aodhan Perry, chairperson of CCC, said the community council’s proposal could increase the overcrowded service by at least 100 per cent.

“And the redevelopment of this line could be carried out without causing any train or traffic disruption and for a reasonable cost as Iarnrod Eireann already own the land which is currently lying idle,” he said.

The Broadstone terminal would be located close to the Luas line in Smithfield as well as being beside the new DIT campus being developed in Grangegorman, where there are expected to be 20,000 students). Other links include the Law Society, the HARP development and the city centre.

“Broadstone is as close to the city Centre as Connolly Station, which makes it a desirable destination,” said Mr Perry.

Cabra Community Council is also proposing the development of a major train hub at Liffey Junction (Cabra) which would entail the connection of Heuston Station with Connolly Station without the massive and prohibitive cost of tunnelling.

“Our proposal is to use existing rail lines which pass within 500m of each other at Liffey Junction. A platform linking each line would allow for a Heuston – Connolly link for a fraction of the cost of Tunnelling,” said Mr Perry.

He added that their proposals will increase services on an already overburdened line.

“We will fulfil peoples wishes for a decent public transport service,” he said. “In doing so, we will also save the taxpayer millions by utilising lands owned by Iarnrod Eireann but currently lying idle. The support of DIT, Maynooth and the local elected representatives is most welcome and we intend to continue to press for a speedy implementation of our plans.”

Cabra Community Council’s proposal also calls on the Minister of Transport to ensure that the proposed METRO link to the airport is run through the Ballymun, Finglas, Cabra and North Inner City suburbs as originally proposed in the rail document, ‘A Platform for Change’.

“ Any Metro link with the airport must be located in the highly populated areas of North and Central Dublin,” said Mr Perry. “Our communities must be given the opportunity to avail of a state of the art rail service which will bring massive social and economic benefit to our communities.”

It would seem then that the Cow Parade has not vanished from our streets but simply been reorganised and rediected away from those yob-prone areas to more gentille surroundings.

I meant more from a cost point of view than anything else although I appreciate that Lissadel is important for historical reasons and that cost should not always be the paramount concern when it come to our heritage.

And as for Farmleigh I still remain to be convinced of our need for a state guesthouse/ alternative cabinet venue/ general not in use/ occasional open to the public curiosity.
