And another mention for it in todays Independent…so plenty of good publicity. A response from the City Manager or Lord Mayor would be very interesting.

anything to do with the mooted breakup of CIE prior to Brennan’s move. It woulod make sense not to commence a major real estate project if your company was going to be taken out from underneath you/

Thats it. The new section had them installed (saw them erected one night) and I guess a more formal arrangement is needed now we can expect flooding every year.

New trees being put in on the median between Abbey and the Bridge today. This stretch should have been completed by now. Its good to see the City council winning the publicity battle over the remaining 10 now that the public have had a chance to see just how good the street will look. I think its vital for the street that replanting be allowed all along its length.

I agree as wll about hardwiring for the Christmas lights on the plaza. What a lack of foresight. I think they should have gotten Disney in to do the decorations though!

Also another premisies on the street is undergoing ronvations. The snooker hall, beside the Royal Dublin. Cant remember its name now they have taken down the sign. Anyway the owners have taken away all its 1930s style lighting…which is rather a shame i think.

I’d say that is just a temporary measure while the new traffic arrangments take effect.

Interestingly the new ‘pedestrian plaza’ on Green West consists of an extended pavement in from of the Royal College of Surgeons. Hardly worth it I would have though.

Supervalu are putting a new food store similar to that on Aston Quay. Exactly what the area needs.

A second kiosk has opened for business housing a small art dealer. The actual effect of another stall opening is quite good. I understand a newsagent is next. Also interminable delays on the Boardwalk extension! Anyone know whats holding it all up? Do you think we’ll see repaving of O’Connell Bridge as the next project along here.

I think you pose some good questions here Graham. I was considering a more approriate route for Luas Green and I think turning east down Nassau St and down Westland Row would be a much more visionary route. Visionary in that it would be recognising that the city centre is expanding and that areas such as Grand Canal Dock and Spencer Dock are now import city qurters whcih not olky need to be integrated into the city and accessible from the city but also need to be seen as places that are accessable from other areas of the city. Just as weit was felt to be unsatisfactory to terminate the Red Line at OConnell St so I think it would be a mistake to see the Green Line only go this far. Visually I think the Luas wirescape would be a real retrograde step for College GReen and Westmoreland St just as the debate is developing towards moving these streets away from traffic towards pedestrians. All in all I think an underground interconnecter combine with a new fares structure and integrated ticketing would provide the most cost effective and best solution to tying up all these transport strands – Luas Dat and Mainline, as well as buses.

Diaspora – the thinking behind the reduced median and wider footpaths is that pedestrian traffic will use the sides and the median will be reserved for services…such as bik stands, telephone kiosks, and the retail units (according to the architect who designed the scheme at DCC)

    Hear hear!

What is happening with the Ilac centre. Is there a master plan for the development (it seems to have three seperate entities) and has anyone seen waht we can expect once the redevelopment is complete?

Is phase one all about chatting vaguely about something while compiling detailed financial projections for the project… on the back of an envelope of course.

A few comments on Newstalk 106 y’day suggested that the Luas could go underground from Dawson Street to Westmoreland Street under Trinity. A bit expensive I would have thought. Having had a good look at the area today I think that there are definately serious considerations regarding the suitability of Nassau St, Grafton St and College Green for the trams. They are very narrow and where will the bus routes go? Theres a genuine problem here.

Also I think this story goes to show that despite all the rhetoric the Government have absolutely no master plan for an integrated transport system in the city. Its all multi-agency reports that take no account of each others plans or perspectives. Not enough private sector input (apart from consultants of course). And little or now actually political will to commit to a plan and push it through.

I think the existing paving layout is being retained and repaired. It has been in like a warzone for some time now. What are peoples impressions of the new additions to the street? I think the grandly named Moland House is quite nice and definately a good replacement for Lenehans orange barn. The new copper and wood clad building on the south side opp James Joyce St is also quite a good addition. Im not convinced by the boring redbrick and glass offices opposite it. So many of these new schemes seem to be devoid of imagination.

Finally a planning notice has gone up for the currently delapidated siite around the railway bridge here. It included a new pesedtrain street through to Foley St.

I cant believe that you are all seriously suggesting that a McCafe is a positive development for O’Connell St. I see no difference between a McDonalds proper and this McCafe format. It still amounts to cheap facades, litter and a move away from encouraging higher quality establishments onto our main streets. You may as well say that the fact Supermacs sell Italian gelati is a cultural step upwards for them!

They also do much better coffee than Bewleys, if only they would remove those horrible plastic signs.

As for this…well I think it says it all when we have moved away from a cup of coffee being a civilised daily pleasure to a plastic cup of scalding hot water with a safety warning and ample opportunity for a lawsuit, to go!

The first ‘bookstall’ opens for business today on Grattan Bridge. Its a florist…booksellers didnt seem to interested in the stalls. I wish them the best of luck but I have a feeling it will be a difficult spot to make a success of. The bookstalls look very sleek and modern when opened although a more colourful awning should have been used. They look a little bland and lifeless. Perhaps an opinion poll would be in order….

It seems that the renovationof Busaras starts today. Notices have gone up indicating a six-month period of works. Also the pavments around the station are finally being repaired after the Luas works.

Will it be worth it? Anyone spent a Friday afternoon around here lately. Its god damn awful. Coaches and traffic (exacerbated by the works on Talbot St) josstle for space with the trams. Some sort of rationing of the number of buses using the station will have to be considered.
