ParticipantLiffey St: Actually I thought this was quite a nifty solution although I would much prefer to see a proper paving and pedestrianisation scheme put in place to link in with Henry Street. Its looks much better than the lumpy mess that existed here up to a few weeks ago.
As for Pearse St: Agree with Graham and also observed the lifting of the original paving whihc seemed to have been done with restoration in mind. A repaving scheme for Pearse St was put on show last year at CC as part of the planned QBC along here. Im not sure what type of materials are planned. My guess is concrete slabs and graite kerbs as exisit at present…they look quite sufficient. Some repaving of the Street from Grand Canal Dock down to Ringsend was recently completed. Depressingly it is pour concrete (which is grand until it needs to be dug up) and not a new tree in sight….

ParticipantThere is a reimagining of sorts taking place off Barrow Street. Among the warren of new development there (overdevelopment if ever I saw it) is the building a new apartments and offices within the cast iron gasometer. Looks quite interesting

ParticipantEminently sensible
but of course its one of their busiest days…would a turkey vote for christmas! last year town really was horrible after 6…urbanisto
Participant6 months to pave a small stretch. Ridiculous eh. And considering that the CC are commiting to completing the paving by the end of 2005, and restoring all the statues adn starting on the Prnell St improvements. Nothing more will happen until after St Patricks Day. Perhaps a burst of activity can be expected then. Anyone hear anymore on the issue of the older trees on Upper OConnell St.
Kiosk can be viewed I think on the reflecting city website (recently revamped) at http://www.reflectingcity.comurbanisto
ParticipantIts very odd how long this is taking. Its n ot that bloody complicated. What strikes me most about the whole Abbey lark is that how the Govt so obviously have no real idea what to do or where to put it. We have had the larking around with the present, blatantly unsuitable site. Then we went on to Hawkins, Infirmary Rd and Parnell Sq….all of which are have problems not least in that both Hawkins and Infirmary are promised to other parties – Hawkins to a developer in lieu of another site for the DoH and Infirmary Rd to be the new location for the Courts Service. Parnell was a fiasco…although a wlecome one. The DCC plans for the Square announced last week call for a hotel here! Finally there is the Carlton site. The most obvious and best site IMO. And that takes over a year to get through the Courts.
Incidently, adding to this theme. The Times announced last week that Hawkins House would be swapped with another development, most likely Connaught House on Burlington Road. Meanwhile the Indo announces Connaught House is the site for the new hq for Hibernian. Does anyone know whats going on…..

ParticipantI wonder if its a misprint and the CC mean a new bridge at Eden Quay across to Hawkins St. This has definately been mooted before and is part of the IAP for OConnell St. I have never heard a bridge at Merchants Quay mentioned before. And I stand by my comments….what will it connect? Four Courts with SFX? Very odd.
Elsewhere….the new extension to the Boardwalk opens on March 17. I say this every year but can DCC hire a steamcleaner for the rest of the Boardwalk and the bridges and give them a bit of a spruce up for our National Holiday. All those tourist should not have to see a years worth of grime as they promenade. Also (from today’s Irish Times) is news that the Liffey bat service should be in place by April. The new pedestrian bridge at chq arrives in March and opens in May while chq itself is still shrouded in letting uncertainty. Pity really…Im dying to get in and have a look. The DDDA are also to announce an upgrade to Custom House Quay to complete the new Liffey walkway and are apparently vacating their awful building and demolishing it later this year.

ParticipantAaah no. Lets just build more roads. Sure its great fun! Sure you cant stop development!
urbanisto
ParticipantWhy? Whatever for. Whats wrong with the exisiting bridges!
urbanisto
ParticipantI think this might have been granted….there was scaffolding being assembled there this morning
urbanisto
ParticipantHmmm if you thought it looked ugly with half the scaffolds off you should see the rest. Tasteless, boring rubbish. Also the bulk behind the facade is quite substantial. Those glass box windows look dreadful. And no doubt we can expect boring featureless shopfronts like those on the new Talbot St developments…. and a Centra. That would be nice, and much needed on this stretch of the Quays!
Meanwhile across the street…. the boardwalk is finally nearing completion. Only took about 15 months.

ParticipantIts a bit daft this isn’t it. I mean who is it aimed at? Hardly those considerate civic-minded junkies that brighten up many of our city streets. Seriously, most normela people take it for granted that these activities are illegal. Why on earth do the DCC need to go to such lengths.
urbanisto
ParticipantAll will be revealed in a couple of weeks. Any changes to the G of R will have to take in the OPW…I hope this is included in the plans.
urbanisto
ParticipantWow – I have never before seen what this stretch looked like before the EBS got their hands on it. What a shame. What a nice interesting mix of buildings. Very much a mirror of the opposite side of the street.
urbanisto
ParticipantA well deserved spring clean for the ballustrades. Now lets tackle the appalling pavement. The works to install new signaling havent helped. If anythiung it looks worse than ever. Lets bite the bullet and have new granite paving. Perhaps all those old flags lifted from OConnell St. Also the phone kiosks on the corner of the bridge and Eden Quay should be removed. Its a very narrow stretch here. Probably the most inappropriate spot for 3 kiosks I can think of!
The Boardwalk extension is finally being completed. Some smart new bus shelters along this trech would be welcome as well. In fact getting rid of the bus stops full stop would be good.
urbanisto
ParticipantYes I’ve notices this as well. There was nothing spectacular about the building but it was a nice facade and I am surprised they didnt retain it. This site seems to be waiting for the chipper to move out. Further up Townsend St are two new office developments either side of the street. There’s is lots of derelict land and unsatisfactory landuse arund this area. Good to see it getting a boost
urbanisto
ParticipantIs there? I dont see this at all. The same lampstandards in both. More street signage in the first, bike stands etc. The only extras in the second (and its hard to see anything) are bollards and the Arches sculptor on the traffic island.
I think the renovated version works much better then its replacement. I hate this 60s curtain wall effect of steel, glass and panels. Its so uninteresting.
Whatever happened to the OPW plans to renovate/rebuild the block on the otherside of the cemetery?
urbanisto
ParticipantThere was another proposed in Fingal County Council area – Hatsfield. Think its fallen foul of the planning appeals bord though
urbanisto
ParticipantIf the NSS is to mean anything Dick Roche will have to set this truly awful decision aside.
urbanisto
ParticipantI understood that the Protected Structure register was revised and update with the formulation of each development plan.
urbanisto
ParticipantAnd cut down the mature trees on this stretch. One met its untimely end already. How we are supposed to move towards a green city when trees and planting can be so easily done away with is beyond me. All part of Trinity’s continuing commitment to the public environment of Pearse St
BTW the pavements of Pearse St will be widened as part of a CC renovation of the street put on display last April. Includes QBC and cycle lane, new planting, paving and street furniture.
