ParticipantThe most over announced story in history! Keep in mind that the plan is from 2007….meaning that you have to vote the arseholes back in if you want to see all your shiny metros and luas entensions. And if the alterbative get in sure we’ll have to reassess the plans then…to suit changing needs. Bullshit. Martin Cullen ihas to be the most ineffectual minister ever. Still no sign of integrated ticketing… announced by Lowry in 1996. No doubt it is part of the PLAN!

ParticipantI think the Globe Bar on S G Georges St have a couple of the lanterns

ParticipantThey werent too careful about lifting them though…..guys were working around them for quite a while oblivious to whether they got damaged or not. They should be reused – maybe on Capel Street which is due a repaving or even OConnell Bridge itself.

ParticipantIt would seem logical to cut down on the number of stores….especially as rent in the St Stephens Green Centre must be quite high. But its a major store in the SSGC and I wouldnt be surprised if they felt that the area could take stores at both locations. There’s a lot of new retail space coming on line in this area (South Anne Street, South Kings Street, change of use on South William Street). Good to see.
Back to an earlier point about the new pedestrain element abutting a protected stucture. It seems the wall is getting a curved frame which should tie the developments into each other.

ParticipantOoooh thats harsh…. shame on you!

ParticipantI notice that Fingal CoCo have vacated their offices on OConnell Street. Theres a notice up advertising a sale of furniture and property if anyone is interested. Has the building been sold off. There are a couple of urgent revamps due on the street and this building is one. The Royal Dublin Hotel, Findlaters House and JWT and National Irish Bank on the corner of Henry St as well.
Progress on the paving seem,s to be coming along nicely. I think thje median should be complete by the end of the month (its almost there) and the side pavements are being made ready. What chance of a fully completed project by Patricks Day (and obviously definately for the new 1916 parade)urbanisto
ParticipantInterestingly one of the residents interviewed in the Times today makes the point that the new stadium will be like having Liberty Hall in her back garden. She pointed out that, with boundary changes, the stadium will be as little as 15m from her home.
I like the new stadium. Its a very clever design and very eyecatching. If I read right the ‘dip’ or undulating roof is a product of the desire among the architects to meet residents concerns about overshadowing. And the finished product willbe all the better and more distinctive for it. Frank McDonalds piece is quite informative. The picture on the front of the times doesnt sell it for a minute though….at least not to leafy D4 residents. But as one other woman pointed out the alternative to the stadium is residential development and observing the shenanigans at Jury’s that means high density high rise stuff. I think most people will be practical in the end although I think a 2 month planning process is a little too optimistic

ParticipantPrevaricate and flap about helplessly if you are the statutory authority it would seem

It’s perhaps the number developers best feel they can get away with, the threshold of the acceptable. And I do think the Heuston Gate project has a lot got to do with that. Personally, none of the proposed 32-storey structures for Dublin do anything in the slightest for me – including Mr. Crosbie’s Point plan.
I have to agree about the Point Village tower…. it doesnt look particularly striking (although I am working from the sketch in today’s IT). Unfortunatelky we have to depend on the DDDA for planning permission and they havent been overly impressive in providing a high design standard to date. This will be an important building so a high standard is vital.

ParticipantForgive me for stating the obvious but why dont you just ask your planning office what they need. The planner wont bite you know. Its his job to facilitate development as well as control the standard of that development. Besides building a relationship with the planning office from the start is bound to be beneficial to your project.

ParticipantRather than the usual suspects I would be interested to hear all your opinions on the Top 10 (or whatever) ugliest NEW builds in the city. I mean buildings which have gone up since 2000. Celtic Tiger ugliness is what Im after.
Here are some contributions:
The Capel Building – Dublin’s latest planning horror
The Laughter Lounge – haha very funny
The Ivy Exchange – check out the latest dross on Parnell Streeturbanisto
ParticipantThe Gravity Bar
The rotunda of City Hall (I know you cant but wouldnt it be great!)god how depressing I can hardly think of anywhere realistic

Participantyou make some good points here PDLL… there is actually a very vibrant social scene out there if only people had enough imagination to try something different. Seems to have been no end to festivals this year…. im tripping over them.

ParticipantIm looking for interesting solutions for small temporary buildings such as innovative cladding, unusual designs, materials etc. I started with the Laban Centre in Deptford London and I was just wondering if anyone had seen anything else worth mentioning. I am thinking about buildings used for maketing suites, or ticket sales kiosks or info centres.
Thanks for any help.

ParticipantIm sure the Beit Foundation is designed to look after the estate once its founders died

ParticipantWouldnt it be great of we has this facility on Archseek to foward all these issues to a relevant person. Problems with OCSt?….email to the project manager, hate the kiosks?…tell the area manager. Wonder what on earth is going on with this building….email the area’s planner.
No sign yet of the promised improvement scheme for Capel St which was supposed to address sites like this along with the pavements and public domain.

Participantyup… and increasingly delapidated. Its bizzare – such a prime location. Now this would be an ideal Starbucks site…just in case i get accused of anti-Starbucks bias!

Has anyone got any images of the no motorbike signs, I think they look great even if they are being completely ignored.
They’re not even straight! I reckon theu’re temporary. In fact I reckon a lot of the signage put in is temporary….to be removed and replaced once the pavement works are completed.
