ParticipantMe too. It looks terrible. Cheap and nasty. What going in here? A Hilton or a Travelodge.
Was this what went through planning. Can enforcement be brought in?urbanisto
ParticipantI’ve been quite surprised at the negativity here towards the scheme given that we’ve only seen two images! It might be worth waiting for the full plans. I think may aspects of the scheme are worthwhile and I dont really have any concerns about the new squares on OConnell Street and Henry Street. They will serve to break up the very rigid form of these two area. The loss of the terrace along Henry Street is regretable though. I cant picture the relevant buildings at the moment.
The ski slope is obviously going to be contentious. The obvious desire of the developer is to allow for southfacing apartments with spectacular views over the south city and Dublin Mountains under the park. I cant imagine it being a very pleasant park given our environment but perhaps that will all change with global warming, It is an interesting idea though. Hopefully the roof level of the various buildings are designed in such a way as to make them worth looking at.
The Carlton facade looks like it will be where the Fingal offices are now. Should we just consider the demolition of the facade for the sake of a more coherent scheme. Not sure.
Can wait to see the finer details. This is one that’s going to keep us occupied for quite some time.

ParticipantOr an enormous tub of melted chocolate to pour over it all! a minute on the lips…..

ParticipantHo Ho! I can see clouds of steam from the ears of various contributors already rising…
urbanisto
ParticipantSpeaking of rising balloons….one was proposed close to here at one stage as part of the (long forgotten) Howley Harrington plan for Temple Bar

ParticipantIts a disgrace isnt it. The Council are way out of order on this one. But hey no one in this country values accountability it seems and only NIMBYists appeal to ABP, right! So whatever. Go ahead with the scheme. It will be a great thing to moan about in the coming years.

ParticipantThat scheme looks dreadful! Absolute shite. Just take the remains down and relocate them to a park as a feature and build someything half decent on the site.

ParticipantHe never said “stated aims” but I think common sense would tell you that that was the intention. Larger metropoles at strategic locations on main roads and smaller predestrian sized units in pedestrian areas.
urbanisto
ParticipantSuch a huge and important site….its amazing that DCC havent drawn up some guidelines for its development, or made an Action Area Plan or prepared an urban design framework and asked for some public feedback on wwhat should go here. Disgraceful!
urbanisto
ParticipantNone worth keeping that I can see. Just some tat along Moore Street, except for the three “national monuments”.

ParticipantTwas a joke of course

ParticipantThere really needs to be some excellent architecture here though, not simply a suburban style shopping mall or even the large scale boxes proposed for parts of the Arnotts site. I would expect to see a lot of high quality stonework and some key feature corners and facades to integrate the whole complex into the street. I am VERY excited to see what is proposed. Its curious that very few details of the scheme have leaked into the public domain.
Incidentially I thought Joe O’Reilly made some pertinent observations in his submssion to the RPA on Metro North. Just as the St Stephen’s Green Centre would be the ideal spot to develop the interchange station between DART Underground, Metro, Luas and bus (knocking the existing and redeveloping), the “Carlton” site should also be seen as a valuable working area for metro in this part of town. Could they even start the boring tunnel here (each way) and use the whole site as a works area for the city. There would be a lot less impact.

ParticipantI think there is a good arguement for breaking the monotony of the streetscape along here (formally as you say fergair) by creating a new street in towards Moore Street. This block is very large and impermiable and is probably one of the reasons why people dont walk further up O’Connell Street

ParticipantI have to say fair play to all for being motivated enough to get involved and stay involved with this. I personally don’t object to the smaller units but I think in light of the level of objections to this the City Council will be obliged to rethink things a bit. The shame of this is that a proper strategy to improve the quality of street furniture and signage in the city is put back a few years.
The obvious thing to do its to put in place elements of the scheme funded by DCC and maybe the Dublin City BID and redically rethink how advertising should be presented in the city with public consulation.

ParticipantThere is a large development planned on Middlke Abbey Street including a bus station nof all bizzare things. The main part of the development is a hotel. Also in planning at the moment is a development beside Zanzibar with a link bridge across to the proposed bus station/hotel
I agree about further down Abbey Street. Its so dead and I blame Luas for not creating a more positive environment here. Its sterile and useless

ParticipantNot really….most decisions I have been associated with are put back in this manner. One week at a time. Its due to the pressure the Board are under.

ParticipantIts incredible that this project has taken so long to come to fruition (pardon the pun). Even despite this story we are only at preferred tender stage…not tender agreed. There is still further design (and no doubt substantial changes to the original plan), planning, appeals (likely), construction and then no doubt we’ll have a CHQ-like saga of finding tenants.
Zzzzzzz Wake me up when we’re there

ParticipantWhat was the story?
