ParticipantHow disappointing to see the works on College Green doing nothing to change the status quo on this poorly used public space. The infamous view of the Green from Grafton Street will still contain all that collection of street tat after the paving is relaid as it did before (very important phone boxes there).
No new street lighting proposed – even though the streetlighting around here is among the ugliest in the city. Why not some of the large floodlights from O’Connell Street plaza?
Assorted poles and signage and phone boxes and telecom cabinets all stay in place…in fact even more poles will be required because as we all know any pedestrian crossing has to consist of about 10 sets of lights these days. As with signage, the more lights you see the more likely you are to take notice.
And of course those lovely acres of tarmac will still be there too by the looks of it, despite the new paving being laid.urbanisto
ParticipantI actually thought they were doing an okay job. Carefully taking up paving and relaying it. Its baffling why our raods constanly need to be dug up (Henry Street for example) but at least they are doing it properly.
The works on City Hall plaza are for the bike scheme (whcih incidentially are also being done to a high standard)
Another noticable job is the new bus gate at College Green.urbanisto
ParticipantI have never seen that memorial. And here I was thinking I’d seen it all.

ParticipantThey really pushed the boat out on that plan for College Green. A traffic engineers wet dream by the looks of it…lots of signage and barriers and controlled crossing points and lines on the roadway. It is a very very poor substitute for what C G really deserves which is a high quality, attractive and redefined public domain.

ParticipantI think there was a seperate application for that site…must check it out.
Agreed about the An Taisce bashing…. you shouldnt knock civic engagement – especially given the times we’re in.

ParticipantAnd you’re catching some really well done pavement works in the lower right corner as well. Lots of those around the city lately.

ParticipantThe Clarence is on hold until saner times prevail. Two years from what I heard. They still intend redeveloping however.

ParticipantI see scafolding gone up around the Revenue offices on O’Connell Street (seen from afar so I might be wrong). This is getting all its windows replaced. And a clean?

ParticipantWow what great pictures. I remember being very young and taking teh 20B around Gardiner Street and what was then Waterford Street and seeing all these empty shells.
I cant say that its fair to say that the area is better now because the level of decay and neglect was so bad. Had these buildings been cleaned and improved and the public realm enhanced then I think the area would have looked so much better. I think the loss of this whole quarter of Georgian buildings was absolutely tragic. We usual focus on Fitzwilliam St and the ESB offices but what went on here was worse. Still as the recent RTE programme on O’Connell Street showed the dereliction was so gradual and finally so pervasive that the area really had no choice but to be redeveloped. I cant say I like a lot of whats gone up in its place though.
A real shame. And the treatment of the remaining North Georgian core is no better now then back then.

ParticipantFrom what I see there appears to be a creep creep of these units. Loioks like another appearing on South King Street outside H&M.
Not a sniff of the proposed signage, bicycles, toilets, heritage plaques either. Nothing!urbanisto
ParticipantYou also seem to be way ahead of your time having anticipated the GPO plaza 20 years before it happened…. a visionary no less!! 😀
