ParticipantAnd of course remove that “high quality” lighting.
Actually I agree that the shopfront is rather ugly. I would actually hazzard a guess that West’s refusal to update their premises and maintain a quality retain frontage contributed to their demise. The shop just doesnt attract anyone from the street.

Where do you think Joe O’Reilly is going to get the €1 billion to build the thing?
How likely do you think John Lewis are to set up shop in Dublin in this climate? Remember no anchor, no development.urbanisto
ParticipantThe Royal Dublin is a separate application for a new headquarters for Dublin Bus to replace the one being demolished.
All very standard conditions. A couple of minor changes to the Carlton building and the link to Moore Street. What a depressing outcome. And what a waste of time (a lot of time) and money. Its not just an indictment of our flawed planning system but of the paucity of imagination of architects and the crude understanding of city making by the aparatchiks of Wood Quay.
The only good thing to come from this is that it will probably never be built. However, expect demolitions to take place….just in case.

ParticipantIts mentioned in the new City Development Plan. I think it needs to figure more strongly though. Its a shame to see the Markets building degrading already.

ParticipantAccording to Christine Casey:
“Delightful, freely modeled terracotta label stops of fish, fruit and vegetables supplied by Henry Dennis of Ruabon, though the template has been attributed to CW Harrison. The figures of Justice and Fair Trade over the Mary’s Lane entrance are by Harrison”
A fabulous book! God bless you Christine.

ParticipantHave you tried Christine Casey’s Buildings of Dublin? I’ll look tomorrow. Also try the Irish Architectural Archive. They might have plans. Or the City Archive in Pearse Street.

ParticipantYes but its impossible to find a Western Union, Dublin Bus Ticket Agent or an ATM in Barcelona 🙂

ParticipantDo a search on the City Council’s planning search page for Smithfield Public Realm Enhancement. Its an application at present.

ParticipantArchitecture isn’t all about aesthetics!? I have heard it all now.

ParticipantI agree that this bridge is disappointing road users already. Some gripes from me include the “No Right Turn” at Seville Place onto North Strand. This should surely be a no brainer! However it is fair to say that Summerhil is much less busy than North Strand whcih may account for this restriction.
The sequencing of lights along Seville Place is terrible. There are about 5 or 6 sets which simply make yuou stop and start all the way along. Annoying.
Still at least as I am crossing the bridge from south to north I find out which direction the Wax Museum is! Thanks for that v. v. handy sign.
Im also taking bets on how long all that lovely lighting will last……December 14, 2009 at 11:32 am in reply to: college green/ o’connell street plaza and pedestrians #746569urbanisto
ParticipantWhat a shame….poor old Dame Street.
urbanisto
ParticipantIn fairness its not that ugly compared to some. Its the right decision for this location though.
Still on the case newgrange…:-)

ParticipantYes I had heard they were pretty poor. They seem to be overly constrained by the ACA.

ParticipantThe revised Dublin Central proposals were recently submitted to the Board. Anyone see them yet?

ParticipantI suppose a proactive measure for Parnell Street etc would be if people made submissions on the Draft Plan calling for its rehabilitation and supporting the Parnell Sq Framework. The Draft Plan goes on display at the end Dec. Plenty of tine over Christmas for people to put together short subvmissions. Put your ink where you mouth is Archiseekers!
urbanisto
ParticipantSadly the new Draft Development Plan doesnt offer very much to Parnell Street. It is suggesting supoporting the development of a mini Chinatown on the street. I must see if the Parnel Sq Framework is mentioned.
If I remember rightly the planned improvements were all postponed due to the uncertainty of Metro North and Luas BX. In fairness to DCC there is no point in spending €3m on paving etc if the RPA are going to come along and rip it all up.
The new Draft Dev Plan will include a policy to upgrade the public domain of the entire Grand Civic route from Parnell Sq to Christchurch.
