Because it benefits him and his company enormously brian, to tear apart urban fabric and build anew. i have to agree with what? Mediocrity is the order of the day. Its a conveyor belt of tired old details and weak massing. Slapped on facades with no depth make it look even worse. Corporarchitecture at its heady heights of worst.

not in a position to comment on his ability to lead the riai as i’m not a member, but if business savvy and sucking up to people with money is his way then things could be interesting for the next twelve months

What will? Theres a strong will to get us a transport system in the city and look where thats going. Cant even lay the tracks straight. I must say i shudder at the thought of an irish theme park consuming half of north county dublin. Heavy handed stupidity that will scar the cultural landscape for a long time. Look at the plans!! Its all nice lakes and green. Looks like a school kid drew it

Owen O’Callaghan has emerged as the main irish character in this little drama. He of merchants quay shopping centre and mahon point fame. And most of cork city centre, oh, and the liffey valley, oh and the new liffey valley town centre.

Someones going to turn lusk into a metropolis. Oh the horror

Saw initial proposals on the telly. Monorail, 40,000 apartments, three theme parks, golf facilities etc.

Some eejit then came on and said it shouldnt happen because dublin airport couldnt handle the numbers and we’d have to build an extra runway or two. Did i mention eejit?

Fingal planners have “initial Reservations”, surprise surprise. Could be the best or worst thing that ever happens to this country, or doesnt

I’d suggest you compare the new housing being built in ballymun at the moment to the housing turds springing up across the country labelled “traditional” and “executive” by chancer developers. your answer is there

apparently the technology has all gone to pot because it was quite experimental at the time and unreliable in the long term. nice ideas but the will to keep up the effort isnt there. management is to blame i suppose.

broader acceptance and practical use of the concepts introduced to the city centre by this building would be a great testament to its name. as it is its gone a bit like autumn leaves

Yup. Central bank. Shite. Pure and unadulterated.

Exposed structure maybe. Exposed lack of skill or imagination. Most definitely. Most people i’ve heard defending it are entrenched dubs who grew up drinking under it or getting mugged in the laneways that surround it. As a blow in i must say my first, second, and all impressions of it are close to revulsion.

Here’s to the day i get my last impression of it as they dismantle it piece by clunky piece

A rebuild of an existing structure is pretty futile i think. Thats from an architectural point of view though.

It can make econmic sense if the level of repair required to achieve a usable or sellable unit equals that of a full rebuild. I’d be more enclined to restore carefully or else demolish and start a new design from scratch. Out with the old, unless it could stand on a crutch for a bit

Factory oxidised maybe? you can do it in a bath with some special electrolyte . its like electroplating rust from the inside out.

3w design seems so elegant. The sketches and presentation really highlight the good things about the scheme. Sensitive to the site, good massing, a decent lanmark in my mind.

The winning entry lacks sophistication. The renders, materials, assorted rhetoric included, its still just an awkward contorted geometric shape. In practice it will be difficult to build, its finished look will no doubt fall short of what is being shown at the moment, and the geometry and expression will lack expression on the interior, rendering it pretty characterless. Just another liberty hall with a twist as has been said already. One thing i cant appreciate is how they thought a double-height glass box 60 metres off the ground could ever function as a practical recording studio. The acoustics! Oh the horror. Be prepared for a dramatic change in u2’s signature sound from crummy to tinny

I stand by my earlier comments.

If acito and partners weren’t open to criticism they shouldn’t enter competitions.

If they aren’t willing to hear peoples opinions on their work they shouldn’t post images and conceptual writings about such work on public access forums.

If they are not willing to take comments from an irish architecture student made as honestly as possible, then they shouldn’t highlight their plight with regards a competition they chose voluntarily to enter, for an irish site.

    bluefoam,
respectfully, please dont try to inform me as to my role on this firm. If i was a year or two younger i’d tell you to fugg off grandad. I was being quite reserved in my comments about this scheme. I chose not to give my opinions about the letter in question, because i dont think they would be productive in any way. I’ve been involved in competitions in the past and i appreciate their concerns as to the proper running of such a competition, but dont think they have the right to complain because of the reasons I’ve already outlined

on the issue of contempt, please reserve your judgment on my language and phrasing. It is productive to give forth an honest opinion on these forums. telling people to shut up, watch their mouths, mind what they say, and stop being critical is frankly stupid and merely ruins what could otherwise be free flowing debate. I’ve often questioned the points of garethace and asked him to aim for brevity, only because of the difficulty in reading his long posts and garnering information from them in the time it takes my boss to get back from a coffee. I’ve always been open to ideas and suggestions outside my frame of reference, in the hope of widening that frame.

I have no wish to enter a tit for tat debate on the rights and wrongs of posting on these forums. But given that its name is archiseek, and it is a forum on all things architecture, I’d like you to explain how your unending wranglings on the issue of legality, justice, politics, institutional policy, and competition procedure, are more valid than my open critique of a conceptual scheme.

And finally, I personally don’t wish to invite a critique of my work, for the same reasons as what?. I value this facility to discuss and debate my interests, and value my anonymity from those who I choose not to identify myself to. It is, in my opinion, petty and futile to suggest that criticism, constructive or otherwise, is not welcome from those who won’t open their own portfolio.

    to acito and partners,

respectfully, i think your scheme was omitted from the exhibition because it was woefully inadequate in terms of exploration of the brief, and expression of a suitable and strong concept to develop the site.

Being candid for a moment, what the hell were you thinking? Only Peter Chomowicz managed to make more a messy building. At least some entries were honest about their intentions to ridicule this project (De Matos Storey Ryan)

El architino, your genius again ricks me to my granite core. By simple deduction one can see that the best thing about the pier in dun laoghaire is……..the pier. Everyone goes to use the pier, see the pier, bounce on the pier, take bits of pier. More pier, that is the answer. Bows graciously to the golden suited one
