did you hear all the publicans in ireland are going to fight the smoking ban and go to war? and that nearly a hundred million eastern europeans are going to come over here and rip up our celtic tiger for a kebab and ruin us all? even more terrifying is the rumour that ian paisley still has political sway and will be president of ireland by 2005? sometimes i despair

Is he a real architect? A technician that used to work here used to charge 600 to 700 for any size extension, and 1000 to 1200 for a house (planning drawings only). He did it in his own time and therefore he wasnt covered by professional indemnity and couldnt produce working drawings. If you got planning and built it based on his planning drawings he would have no responsibility for them.

My boss on the other hand would charge 2 to 2 and a half grand for a small extension and and double figure percentage of the build cost for a house. What a difference a degree makes

Still looks like hell. Paving up all over the place. Mess.

The new streetscape down by the lee end is a disaster. Street furniture is awful and the undulations and pitfalls in the new footpath layout is a series of lawsuits waiting to happen

If you’re in DIT approach dermot boyd, design staff in first year at the moment i believe. If you’re UCD i’d still approach him. Butter him up and tell him how nice his suit is

havent heard a thing budday. been sweating out solpadeine since tuesday lying in bed with the flu. managed to catch some snooker though and get in touch with my inner oprah fandom.

Cork County planners are notoriously difficult. I’ll try and get in touch my my guys in there over the weekend and see what the inside story is

brian i think one of my favourites has to be that little chapel we saw in otianemi, near alto’s university. enchanting the way it connects to the landscape and the sparse cross out amongst the trees. very spiritual

objections can be made on any grounds. suitability, sustainability, appearance, character, purpose, effect, site characteristics, personal grudge, you name it. are you objecting or being objected against?

christ, i know its a pier and all the rest, but could anyone go beyond the concept of lashing a boatish structure up there?liebeskinds is predictable, merrills is too trendy (rip off of liebeskind) tallons is ghastly and too simplistic, and heneghan pengs looks underdeveloped. i’d say give it to them all for another 6 months and let them create a proper building.

and is it just me or does the side of merrills look like a grossly enlarged bitmap rather than windows and texture of any significance?

the morrison is utter wank. touted as sponsored by john rocha. i think he did a lamp fitting or something and they paid him a fortune for the name.

i’d say again tom de paor. he has his own practice doesnt he? and howley harrington have to be in there, millenium bridge, their work in ballymun

if an taisce has a right to bar members whose opinions and motives differ vastly from that of the core members, then surely a progressive architectural website like this can ban an taisce stalwarts. bus?

    ???

the viz guy is always looked upon with a certain mistrust because he is seen as superior in skill. the anti-social aspect is there because for an individual to adopt a stance where they feel the need to avoid human contact is something that must have been there before hand. i have allowed myself to achieve a certain competence in viz, and it has won me promotion and raise, and a few decent clients aswell, but it’ll never be the be all and end all of my life. anyone who allows themselves to be pidgeonholed as the geek in an office is a fool. architecture is about invention and discovery, not painstaking modelling of one-off door handles and wimber details
