Participanti agree. the central bank has aged incredibly well, and from several vistas, including the above, looks the business. also a big fan of the bord na mona building. not so much of others. But Sam was a pleasant fellow to deal with. RIP

Participantyeah, everything’s shite isn’t it

ParticipantWalking down Cuffe Street today for the first time in ages, noticed it has an entire canopy of mature trees. They do serve to hide the hideous flat complexes on either side as one perambulates forth.
Other hideous Dublin streets could do with them

ParticipantThat UTV item is junk journalism, lazily lifted from some other dozy organ. It’s clear the plaque is no more than three months there
My guess is that it’s some media studies or art student doing a project – and the reaction to the plaque, or rather how we are all “interpreting” it – will be at the centre of his/her thesis
I find that as people have more leisure time and money, hoaxes are becoming more prevalent. Tiresome, really:(

ParticipantMy first thought when I heard this prank was: that’s the work of Paul Clerkin!
so I take it this wasn’t your handiwork Paul? ๐

ParticipantI’m not sure that SoHo has the same coherence as previous council attempts to rejunvenate parts of the city – such as Temple Bar, the Harp project, etc. The areas to be regenerated are quite far-flung, and the entire district is quite wide. I get the feeling that this is a handy council tag to slap on a number of different projects happening in the south inner city.
Still, good to see someone cares. The redevelopment of Cork Street, almost 50% rebuilt in the space of two years, has seemed a bit higgedly piggedlySue
ParticipantGive the man’s family a chance to bury him before you start deconstructing his character. What the hell happened to the noble Irish tradition of not speaking ill of the dead while their body was above ground?
Shame

Participant“Chaos feared as new city Luas link gets green light as well”
why is everyone’s first reaction to news of a major infrastructural problem to have a big moan about all the “disruption” and “chaos” it’s going to cause? ๐ก Will people never learn? you can’t make an omelette withouth breaking eggs; you can’t have a first class transport and infrastructural system without digging up roads.
Remember all the fuss about the “disruption” Luas was causing on Harcourt Street? Who mentions it now? Now that we have a brilliant tram system linking Sandyford with the city centre? Nobody. But all the whingers and moaners and begrudgers are just resting their tonsils, ready for the next onslaught against the Luas interconnector, Metro or whatever it is that delays their pedestrian lights for more than 10 seconds. They’ll be back with the same whinges, nothing learned from the fact that their last campaign now looks stupid and small-minded ๐ก

ParticipantIt seems that this NCAD move is being driven by Colm O Briain, ex Labour party guru. I don’t think the board is fully supportive, and the student/teacher population certainly isn’t. Given the spate of bad publicity since this story broke, O’Briain may well back off/deny it’s happening/claim he was misquoted or whatever

ParticipantSorry to be a damp squib, and I really know nothing about architecture except that I know what I like, but I find this building really ugly and I’m flabbergasted that it’s won such a prestigious award. I passed it only a couple of weeks ago and was surprised to see the weathering damage to the timber in the building etc. Am I alone in being underwhelmed?
Sue
ParticipantAidan, the interconnector is lowest, at about 30m down. Then the Metro… and the Luas on top
Sue
ParticipantRiddle me this – especially any engineers out there!
If they build a hole the size of Grand Central Station under Stephen’s Green, do they (a) take the soil out at the Green and take it away by lorry, presumably up Leeson Street or (b) start tunnelling at the airport and ship all the soil from under the Green all the way up the 18km tunnel and then take it away by lorry?
Sue
ParticipantUnder the Carlton site is a good idea for a metro station but…. wouldn’t that mean they have to tunnel under the Spire? And wouldn’t THAT mean that the spire would have to come down, at least temporarily? ๐ฎ
