I’m planning a weekend up there soon, so I’ll be on the lookout for the “lump” and “small but tall”! Or has my first time visit been tainted already…

Uh, by the way, who exactly has the means for buying such property, if it were available here?

I like that idea, yes I do. And is it not currently stylish here, to live in the city (if you have money to carve out a nice place for yourself)?

City planners in my hometown are working feverishly to get people back into our small city with a combination of new homes and converting abandoned factories and office buildings. Had I not splurged on coming here, I’d be emailing you from one of those spots!

Don’t let anyone however, rebuild it wrong. We had a beloved old residential building that was demolished for a chain pharmacy, only to be reconstructed a few miles down the road. It is nothing like its previous self and I am sure they did not salvage the ornate iron lift and accompanying shaft (which, had I a truck, would be in the back yard of mom’s house!)

Just wondering if I still qualify as “young” – especially since most of the gentlemen I have talked to on the street wear tweed caps and have “come into town”!

taytos, mummifed bodies, half day DART tours, casino – now we’re talkin’

as they say at home “thanks ya’ll”

This will keep me walking and busing for a few days, yes?

Well Graham, GregF, as far as gender-based patterns in opinions of the spire – what exactly do you mean by “old”?!

I certainly favor the way it catches evening light, disappears in the middle once the sun has gone down, and currently has a little glowing red light floating at the top.

Ah, StephenC and Desmund, thanks for the posts. I also received some tips about Busaras and the Barracks among other things scattered around town.

Surely some other folks will pitch in as well? Anyone else out there? Hello?

Quite frankly Graham, I’m not sure it’s a real berry of a dingle (which would be fitting for a pennisular southern region here, no?)

It’s just an American slang term that popped out, without my thinking.

I suppose you could run with it however, and use it among your peers, and see what they think it implies.

Lord, now I’ll have to ask about who has a roof I can get on? And I haven’t even finished finding out if there are functional spaces underground. So much to find out…

Paul, thank you for the link back to “underground”. Although I’m tempted to nickname it “gopher people”! Much discussion of tunnels, tunneling, passages, connections between buildings – which is absolutely great.

Yet, I was thinking more of space that functions as additional operational space for businesses or carparks. Not sure what you get when you blast down here – viking horns, sludge, water, solid rock?

In my neighborhood at home, a primarily residential area, there is a lovely, yet out-of-place, wedge shaped office building. It’s about 12 stories tall or so, but has this 6+ floor carpark underneath. You’d never expect it from everything else that is around it. A very tidy use of space!

Soo, what exactly has prevented “height” in construction here?

And does this city build underground at all?

What does Eileen Gray make? And is there any Irish fashion industry here, other than the commercial production of wool garments?

Not sure what your thesis is on – but I imagine that an artist’s work can function on many levels at the same time, from haute to mass market tangible. Neat to see the general public adopt style, in every aspect of life.

…if I had internet access worth a dingleberry, I would have chimed in earlier, alas…

What I see around town are more monuments, sculpture and works than I can shake a stick at. At least these projects are being completed.

I gather the city is not a master of maintaining them, but that is a nice little detail left out of many plans!

Nonetheless, I have asked all my friends at home to check out the spire on the web. It will certainly be news to them!

ro_G, thank you for the welcome!

If city planners are not in touch with the people, then I’d have to ask why the project seems to be the single most talked about (and watched) event.

I see it (at the moment) as gifted in bringing people together. It has drawn attention from people of all ages, races, gender and socio-economic backgrounds. Regardless of their opinion, it evokes thought, brings opinions out into the open, connects.
