Less and restricted traffic is one thing, is this what is being proposed for the plaza because that sounds great, we just don’t want to turn our city centre’s into no-go zones for cars.
The streets of Dublin were made for traffic, as any in other town, but just let’s not do what they have done in Holland where most town centers are pedestrianised, and it just doesn’t work or feel right, it’s like walking around a theme park.
If only we could reduce the traffic on the quays, what a mess…..
October 16, 2004 at 10:55 am in reply to: college green/ o’connell street plaza and pedestrians #746052shaunParticipantWe have to be careful here, too many pedestrianised streets can have an adverse effect on a city, streets were made for traffic, obviously we want heavy goods vehicles out of the city but that’s another story.
shaunParticipantThe present Ormond hotel is bloody awful, they should replace it.
shaunParticipantWe treasure all our past architecture of all diferent styles and periods, especially in the towns, once something is built in Ireland it won’t get torn down.
We are essentially a part the British Isles and you can see that everywhere in the architecture, anything up until the 1920’s that is, then the trend turned towards modernism like most of Europe at the time.
The round-tower is a real Irish architectural symbol if you’re talking about Vikings in Dublin etc….
October 3, 2004 at 10:36 pm in reply to: Is Dublins Underground rail network a past fantasy? #746800shaunParticipantA good rail network is a fine thing and can take a huge burden off the roads at rush-hour etc. but an excellent motorway system is essential to connect and go around the towns.
The orbital motorway is not a failure, and is not even completed around Dublin yet.
shaunParticipantI love capel street and wouldn’t like to see it pedestrianised. There is a limit to the number of streets that can be pedestrianised in a city and Dublin has reached it’s limit, sort of….
Anyone ever been to Holland where all the city centre’s are pedestrianised, most have too many streets cut off for traffic but it’s great for cyclists of course.
shaunParticipantI agree with Sue here, the Spire is the best thing to have happened in Dublin since the Central bank, Dame street.
shaunParticipantWould you use the airport to city centre metro link ?
Waste of money I think.
Good stuff on your site, platform 11.
August 6, 2004 at 9:29 pm in reply to: All aboard the Luas, at last Tickets, please: the low-down on Luas #743008shaunParticipantDiaspora, is this metro interconnector you refer to the same thing as platform 11 propose under the ‘broadstone, time for…’ with the airport link included ?
I read last weeks articles about the transport minister’s proposals for a metro link to Dublin airport and the thing will eventually cost 2.5 billion yoyo’s. I use Dublin airport a lot and I find the ‘aer-dart’ service excellent, if you want to go to the city-center or the north or southside. Is this not an airport link and could the 2.5 billion yoyo’s not be better spent elsewhere on the rail network ?
August 5, 2004 at 8:58 pm in reply to: All aboard the Luas, at last Tickets, please: the low-down on Luas #743006shaunParticipantI had the pleasure of riding on the LUAS line for the first time last week on a trip to Dublin. The way to the stations are not sign-posted but once you find them a great train/tram trip awaits you.
The trams themselves are first class, and the run into town is wonderful. The stations are very nicely finished as is all the furniture, bins, shelters etc….
Hope the lads keep it well maintained, it’d be a shame to see it get run-down the way CIE let the DART run-down. Saw a few kids walking along the tracks too.
shaunParticipantI’ve just come back from a trip to Dublin and was up O’Connell str. way, a few years ago I wouldn’t have bothered ’cause of all the junkies and scumbags hanging around but it’s diferent now, isn’t it.
The spike is frikkin shock and awe, it’s like a center of gravity pulling people in from all over the city. Cleary’s is my favorite department store in town, I mean, it’s a real department store, a great O’Connell str. and Dublin institution.
A lot has been said about the state of the street from the spike to the Parnell monument, the fact is the quality of the buildings north of the spike is far superior to those that go to the river, particulary on the GPO side, they are bad. Just take a look at the block that includes the Gresham and the Savoy, worthy of a great street, real quality.
I’m a poshie from the south-side by the way, but for me O’Connell str. rules boring Grafton str. anyday.
shaunParticipantThanks for that, they are indeed an interesting addition to the finished article.
shaunParticipantHelp me here guys, bitter dispute with my brother-in-law over this, the question is…………..are those random marks on the lower section of the spike intentional or is the thing damaged ??
shaunParticipantNice bridge, why don’t they replace that god- awful monstrosity that is the East-link with something as pretty, and presumably, safe.
shaunParticipantA great Dublin expression FIN,” like flying a flag in space ” is another.
shaunParticipantall right, Sean, calm down, calm down………
shaunParticipantWhere’s it taken from.The top-floor of liberty hall, right…..It’s an awful sight….Dublin is not a high-rise town.
shaunParticipantDon’t miss
– Dun Laoghaire town hall
– Rathmines town hall
– Mc Kee Barracks, Phoenix park
– Iveagh baths and buildingsshaunParticipantPhil, yes I know that the drunks and junkies now habitate in Morans park, damn shame that, but they have been there for the last 25 years also, fine park, not your typical Irish park at all, even the statue of JC is magnificent, there’s nothing like it in Ireland.
A new public library sounds like a great idea, an opportunity to build something interesting and a also to get more people down into that general area.
shaunParticipantCan’t agree with you there Phil, the appartments are top-notch, among the best in Dublin. There are enough parks in DL, and Morans park is right beside the Pavilion, and a nice park it is too.
Plus you have the piers which are also public places and all the seafront. -
