I am not sure I can take any of this seriously.

Participant“A mall would draw people in, all right” Malls by themselves do not draw people anywhere. It is what they contain or rather it is what is at the end of the mall. The greater regional impact of a redeveloped ILAC and its resulting linkage to Henry Street, pushing activity towards a higher density Parnell Street is what potentially this area is about. O’Connell Street is merely the facade to this, and other things such as the Abbey. If the Abbey moves to the Carlton Site the street could echo to the resounding noise of a modern cultural hub with the Gate and Savoy providing the other anchors. Therefore O’Connell Street would in truth be the Mall.

ParticipantMaghahy & Co were the key people who recieved and channelled the incredible amounts of money spent on the feasability studies. The deal, which was as a percentage of the expected cost of the facility has been the subject of an investigation by the Dail Public Accounts Committee. Paddy Teahon (ex civil servant) was involved in heading up the Campus board and Magahy were previously involved in Temple Bar Properties during the development of Temple Bar.

ParticipantIt should be remembered that the process also included for a development at zero cost to the authority. The cost of redeveloping the pier (significant cost for repair alone) means that all of the schemes are over wrought.
As for the poll, can we have a “none of the above” option?

ParticipantBy the way the HengPeng illustration is particularly crude with poor attempt to resolve the photoshop photo pasteup at the base.

ParticipantCatch 22 – Awards (at present) seem to follow work, work follows connections (influence), Awards follow pattern of influence. Media follow awards therefore Media (promotion) follows the pattern of influence. Follow (show me) the money.
No change. The very fact that nepotistic patterns of influence which were before vaguely understood are rapidly becoming supported publicly (MTV, Various other articles extolling nepotistic behaviour and the value of influence over openness) seems to promote and extend the influence of the few over the benefits of the many. Since the Media portray the same few they take on the mantle of being the cutting edge and acceptable. History is the best judge ofquality.shadow

You be careful about the presence of hidden code in the properties of any document you place on the web.

ParticipantOne place to start would be with the Group 91 architects pre 1990, particularly John Twomey (OPW) Children’s Court Smithfield, O’Donnell Twomey IFC and Photographic Archive Temple Bar, McCulloch Mulvin, IEI and Abbey Theatre extensions, Grafton Architects, Building on Ormond Quay, Shane O’Toole et al Rear of Ark, Temple Bar, Temple Bar Masterplan (in total); facade over content. Throughout the country there are other numerous examples. Also look at AAI awards Books for the era before the awareness of Spanish Rationalism in the 1990’s. Some of the work does not stand up to scrutiny today. The problem with fashion and awards that follow is best summarised in the words of Mao who when asked about the impact of the French Revolution, he replied it was too early to say.

ParticipantI thought Marion went to DIT but did not graduate because she went off to RTE to work in continuity. The rest they say, is history.

Participant“It travels for 3-4 kms without servicing anything other than the hard shoulder of the M50” The point is still well made. In any reasonable medium/high density city you would expect to see a section of rail service housing & shops & workplaces. Thus in that 2 minutes you would expect to see thousands of people living and working.

ParticipantI am not defending anyone. Just don’t single Reddy out as the only one contributing to the problems of architecture in Dublin. And certainly don’t blame architects alone for the mess. Architectural criticism should be just that, architectural. As for the comments, they were not directed against any one contributor.

ParticipantFrankly I am amazed that there is this amount of reaction to the new president of the RIAI, it is bordering on bad taste and certainly may be construed as character assassination. This has been an ongoing problem in the discussion about architectural issues on this and other forums. It also proves the inability (probably not just and Irish thing) to discuss, criticise or constructively debate the qualities of architecture. It certainly shows that not only is there no level ground upon which to stand but it is heavily influenced by local interests. It is these local interests that allows such an apartite system of awards, commissions, honours that plaque the Irish scene that shows us as very poor cousins to the European Architectural scene. The relaxed approach of contemporary architects to work in Europe shows none of these insecurities or hang-ups. Rather than pillory one individual look at the range of past presidents of the RIAI, AAI etc. and look for the type of architectural debate that engenders.

ParticipantFor Vega read Vegas….
I think this is a thin edge to a wedge which will attempt to locate a major gambling and entertainment complex in Ireland for the whole of Europe. I suspect that the developers are linked either to Atlantic City (possibly Trump) or Las Vegas itself. Coupled with a supply line like Ryan Air you can see joint “family friendly” travel packages, for the event. Perhaps it should be called “Event Horizon” (for those not keen on lateral jumps see under film). You can come to Ireland but never experience Ireland. Instead it is likely it would follow Vegas with Themed facilities, probably in the form of come to Ireland, see America. Grand Canyon boulevard, Yosemite Hotel, Ol Yella Gesyer fountains and so on, perhaps Mount Rushmore (with faces of more recent american presidents).

ParticipantConfused, you should be….
The debacle of Eyre Square has been going on for years. The redesign by Mitchell & Associates, after much debate and planning is about to commence on site (my understanding). This included cutting down of quite a number of trees. The response (on of many is due to the culling of the trees amongst other things). The one we see featured on TV this week is by that designer who brought leprachaun world to Chelsea. Unfortunatley this is going to get a great deal of support because of its “easy on the eye (mind)” approach and probably will dismantle a considerable effort on Mitchell & Associates part to redefine Irish Public space.

ParticipantIs this real?
I wonder what deal has been done. The exhibition is inconsistent, wide variation of approaches, some lacking discipline (even architecture), a number highly inflenced by contemporary issues, a few surprises (even duds), some very intriguing, some better than the commended and “winning” entry. It is all a mystery to me.
