Well to be honest, I think our usual set of indigenous daytime drinkers has been bolstered by some of our more ‘al fresco’ drinkers from far off lands. I was over in Moscow a couple of years back and surprised to see how many people drink in the streets. There were many kiosks around the city where you could buy alcohol and happily drink your way around the city. It appears that some of this attitude has made it over here and I observed a number of different groups who were essentially spending the afternoon getting pissed and using the Liffey as a bin as they went. Surely Gardai could encompass the boardwalks on their patrols to attempt to curb this (illegal) activity ?

Well I’m getting seriously demoralised with the use of the new boardwalk on Eden Quay. I walked along it yestarday and I’d say about half of the people sitting there were ‘daytime drinkers’. It was particularly depressing to see one group throwing their ’empties’ into the Liffey once done. Was this it’s intended use ? I actually feel on guard using it now.

I had a feeling about that cupola. It’s actually included under it’s ‘listed’ status (ref 5945) “The Wool Store including hexagonal lantern”. So where is it now ???

Well to be honest, I don’t think it looks any better in the flesh (I pass it going to and from work each day) than in the pictures posted. Maybe, as mentioned, it will look better once all the construction clutter and the DDDA offices (I see they are moving down to the Grand Canal Dock area soon (Today’s IT)) are gone. It just seems like a very overbearing design for a pedestrian bridge which will rarely be opened.

I imagine because both sections of the bridge pivot on their axis to open thus meaning that they will point down (and up) river when open, the barriers are required so boats don’t hit the open bridge head on. This unique design thus requires extra measures to ensure some salty sea dog doesn’t come a cropper. Would be curious to see how often they are opened though ?

Have to say, I don’t agree. Don’t like those gun metal ‘crowns’. Find them a bit over bearing. Also, as it sits, the bridges two pieces don’t meet correctly. The northside section is about six inches lower. You can just make it out if you follow the hand rail in the last picture. There must be some way to jack up the north half (I hope).

    Hello all,

I did some work in a cyber cafe on O’Connell Street (under the amusements). Underneath it is an old ice cream factory that stretches way back down towards The Abbey. At the “front” of the factory, there is an entrance (almost totally blocked up) to a tunnel that runs right accross O’Connell Street to apparently underneath what is now “Supermacs” on the other side of the street. Its apparently one of several that crisss-cross the street. Couldnt persuade the guy to let me have a look though. Will try to find out some more detail.

    Regards,

    Simon

I know the building your talking about & funny you should say coz the owners own another building on Burgh Quay where there is a tunnel which runs under the Liffey and (possibly) all the way up to the ice-cream factory (now the cyber – cafe).

Well at least it’s in one piece and wasn’t knocked off it’s perch with a crane. What’s the sign say ?

I also thought this was a lovely building and especially the small cupola on top. It was very lobsided last year. I took a picture of it before they began work on it. I was disappointed to see that they stripped the old roof as well. I was sure that the DDDA had this down as a listed building including the cupola so when I saw that corrugated type roof I was a bit miffed. Surely it’s temporary ?

I agree with SW101. I’m in a small Edwardian 2-up 2-down and although I love the yellow brick & sash windows I don’t particularly like having to turn on all the lights downstairs at 2pm. I would love to have the money to invert the house and open up the whole upstairs into an open plan living space. Leave the bedrooms and toilet downstairs where light is not so important. Maybe even a roof terrace upstairs. I think it would improve the house immensly.

so according to the ddda newsletter the new foot bridge, the _sean o’casey_ bridge, is arriving this week and will be open by may.

Well the month of March has come and gone and still no sign of the new footbridge. Unless it’s one of those fancy invisible/optical illusion ones as used by Indiana Jones on his last crusade. Maybe I should go down there and attempt it ???

Does anyone know if anything is happening with that 2nd Caltrava (spl?) bridge east of Talbot st. bridge. Last I heard (Dec ’03) no one was willing to stump up the dough ?
