This is down on East Wall Road. What makes you think its been cancelled darkman? They are undertaking preliminary works here for a major development. Anyone by here recently will have seen how the roadway has been doubles in with to accommodate the new Port Tunnel junction.

Although the developers (name escapes me) have been landbanking this area for the past 20 years they have since sublet out part of the site to Heiton Buckley and some 2nd hand car sales firm. It was my understanding that they were progressing well with their planning applications (much to the frustration of our local nimby residents association). ie. if the thing has been stopped on planning grounds I probably would of heard about it.

As far as I can surmise, they are simply not in a position to begin construction for whatever reason. The subletting of the land would indicate that they won’t be starting any time soon either.

Does anyone know when the tower at the Point Village will begin? Is it this year?

The Irish Times quoted Cosbie last week stating that the whole project would begin very shortly and take three years to complete. I guess that means 2012?

Maybe it’s apocryphal but apparently the ‘Irish’ film Waking Ned Devine – the one about the village conspiring to win the lottery – was filmed on the Isle of Man as it was felt the countryside there better resembled what Ireland should look like. In other words the Manx countryside has been properly preserved while the Emerald Isle (a description that’s becoming increasing farcical) has been covered in bungalows and McMansions.

Even if that claim is a myth and the film makers were drawn by tax incentives and nothing else, why is it that the people of this island couldn’t give a toss about the environment when the Scots, Manx, Welsh and the English have gone to huge lengths to preserve their rolling green fields, etc. It takes an undemocratic dictate from direct rule ministers in Northern Ireland to force its people to stop the destruction. Meanwhile in the Republic the race to the bottom continues at full tilt.

What will our descendants think when they see an ugly disfigured countryside where every worthwhile view has been blemished with one-off sprawl. Won’t they look at the beauty of the rural landscapes of our nearest neighbours and wonder what the hell we were thinking?

Can you imagine how this Manx valley would fare in the Ireland of the 21st century? I imagine its unspoilt greenness wouldn’t look anywhere near as green on the ‘Emerald’ Isle itself. 🙁

That new (rubbish) movie with Andrea Corr set in Clare in the 60’s (The boys and girls of somewhere or other ?) was also made in both the Isle of Man and N. Ireland. Obviously the only places that look like Clare in the 60’s, including Clare.

Nope, that one was not nearly as nice or well maintained.

Apologies also from me to PDLL. I guess being stuck in Scotland and subject to spontanious bigoted remarks has made me realise how much I miss the old sod despite the understandable frustrations you are all encountering regarding planning issues / delays/ development of the physical landscape etc . I know there is still a long way to go but development s such as Docklands, Smithfield, O Connell St IAP ( painfully slow I know) and initiatives such as Transport 21 give me confidence for the future .It`s an incredible transformation from the country I left in 1996. Also, you`re right that this isn`t the forum for the social issues raised earlier.
I fully realise Ireland is not perfect and has it`s own issues but I do believe fundamentally we, as a people , are a more kind and considerate lot and that pretty much derives from the fabric of our society so I was just making the point it would be such a shame if we lost that in the face of so called economic development.
Anyway, apologies again and lets look forward some great architectural feats and sound infrastructural developments in the years to come which should put us right back on the map.
On Docklands, anybody know whats happening with the U2 Tower and Crosbies proposed Point Village?

Point Village could/should start in the new year. U2 Tower will be ’07

But why isn’t Grafton Street even under consideration? Its omission is even more glaring looking at those maps. The shortest, straightest route is the only one not illustrated.

In fairness the footfall on Grafton St. would make the building & operation of Luas a nightmare. It was pedestrianised 20 years ago for good reason.

if built merchant’s gate would be quite tall. it would be taller than anything we have right now in dublin. i heard someone say 19 storeys at 64 meters… anything approved at that height or higher seems to be on hold. i don’t know why. why aren’t they built shortly after approval? why all the delays i wonder?

Merchant’s Gate is going on a site which was occupied by a Brickyard up until about a month ago, it’s also surrounded on two sides by road works which are widening East Wall road in preperation for the Port Tunnel. These works will take up two Q2 ’06 so I wouldn’t be expecting any movement on Merchants Gate before then.

It took 20 years of landbanking to acquire the whole site. With the movement in property prices in generally (and especially East Wall) I’m sure the developers are happy to take their time.

Sorry for not following the tread but going back to the title – i work in Grand Canal Plaza (3rd floor) and have noticed a lot of contruction in the last 2 weeks – it seems to have sprung up above the 5 story barrier suddenly. The more interesting is a 10+ story block on the northside of the river between spencer dock and the point which i pass every day. This building is quite bulky and is gaining height rapidly, does anyone know what it is? I thought it might be Merchant’s gate but i thought that was set back further from the river…

The building between Spencer Dock and the Point is Castleforbes Square, mix of apartments and office space reaching about 14 floors at the castleforbes, sherrif st. entrance. Apt. went on sale a couple of weeks ago.

The Excise bar in the IFSC has a stone set in it’s facade ‘His Majesties Excise Office 1827″ (William IV I think). It would be a bit heavy handed to go knocking 180 year old granite plinths out of buildings to affirm independence. However, one has to decide if we are retaining these things as a recognition of our past or as a little bit of ‘Pale’ colonial snobbery. Like mentioned before, I don’t see all these societies dropping the Royal out of their names ???

I’d take all ‘Royal’ societies as a british colonial hangover. The RDS, RCSI, Royal Automobile Society, Royal Heraldic Society etc.

There’s also a couple of nice RIC heads over the door way into Pearse st. Garda station.

The yoke in Dun Laoghaire is a metal type gazebo thing originally built for the visit of Queen Victoria. Torn down by republicans it was reinstated a couple of years ago.

I saw an elderly lady let herself in to the last house on the right on Sunday as I ‘regarded’ the terrace of houses. I shudder to think of their market value. Are the buildings listed ? Read somewhere that they are to be replaced by something for the RCSI and more flats ?

Funnily enough (or not) I came accross town through Temple Bar specifically to walk the length of the boardwalks (on my way back to work at Irish Life). Made it up to Bacholars walk and was stopped by a Gardai. If I had of been five minutes earlier I could have seen it all or even been a victim. Only the day before a colleague told me that whilst having his lunch on the Eden quay boardwalk two gentlemen (gearbags) were beating the head off each other. What’s to be done here ???

To be honest, the cycle path issue is one of serious umbridge (no pun intended) to myself. The DDDA were given a carte blanche in laying a cycle path from the Point to the new foot bridge and they’ve made a complete balls of it. Between Spencer Dock and the Point they’ve inserted three chicanes along the path with sharp (45 degree) turns on it. Normally I’d simply cycle through the chicane but trucks and camper vans are using them for parking 😡 As you continue up the path it simply dissapears for stretches where the red asphalt is replaced by natural stone. Then it finishes completely with no path back on to the road at the Spencer Dock drawbridge. Starts again after the bridge, stops for the two cafes, starts again, stops for the DDDA offices and doesn’t come back. All the way you have pedestrians obliviously walking along the middle of the track.

I mean, laying a cycle track along side the N11 was just too funny as it rolled up and down the cambers of driveways, in between bus stops and buses and generally all over the shop as if the guy with the asphalt was drunk. But when they have a blank canvess and loads of cash and still make a bollix of it it defies logic/belief. I wrote to the DDDA as it was being layed (I could see the out line of the chicanes early on) and I think my mail was ejected into the soup and floated out to sea !!!

I don’t think it’s the top of a colum, rather one of two little flourishes over the alcove (incorrect term I know) which you can see in the picture if you go back through this thread. You may also read that the whole thing is to be demolished and replaced with a hotel.

As a daily cyclist, I think the new section of campshire is a joke. They have inserted chicanes along the cycle lane. Also, every 50 yards or so the cycle lane ends and is replaced with paving. Then it simply disapears before the cantilever bridge at Spencer dock. It all ties in to the obsticle course that is cycling from the Point up to Matt Talbot bridge. When I saw the design for the new lane I wrote to the DDDA asking for an explanation on the design. Still waiting. Like the rest of the cycle lane, I’ll be zigzagging through pedestrians (and chicanes) every morning.
