ParticipantI took a walk down to this site yesterday and I’m not sure if the current building works have anything to do with the U2 Tower. I walked around behind the site and through a Travellers encampment and I think that they are residing on what will be the actual tower site. So unless I’m mistaken, the U2 tower site has had absolutely nothing done as of yet.

ParticipantWhere oh where is that Calatrava bridge ? If I didn’t know better, I’d say Dublin City Council put it’s construction out to tender, chose a company and instead of the construction beginning in ’06 the company in question promptly went out of business. The whole tender process begins again and we can look forward to another year delay before commencement. 😡

ParticipantI was down there during the week and for those who don’t know, the flats are beyond the Dodder with a nice parcel of unused land betwen the Grand Canal Basin and the (west side of the) Dodder. So they could build a ‘nice’ looking block of apartments / office, whatever and no one would have to move anywhere and the Grand Canal Dock redevelopment would be visually agreeable from all vistas. 😀

Where in God’s name is this bridge ?

There seems to be a crane (albeit not a very tall one) right on the footprint of where the tower will go – think its only gone up in the last week so….
I was down there yesterday and can confirm it’s still one big hole in the ground.

The modern Sash Window can now have the thermal qualities of gas filled “k” double glazing and look exactly like the original windows from yester years. Georgian or curved / gothic designs can be stuck onto the glass, achieving the ” narrow” bar traditional look, Weights are not normally used any more, we now use a special weight balanced spring mechanism that is competely hidden from view, and all parting beads are draughtproofed using special seals.
I don’t think bits of framing ‘stuck onto the glass’ is going to look like anything other than reproduction muck, IMHO.

ParticipantCould it be ???
There are two ships docked at the site of the Calatrava (Beckett) bridge laiden with foundation stone. Seemingly up from Arklow (Roadstone send their stuff from there for projects along the east coast).
The rocks are pretty big (a few tonnes each ?) so could be a bit much for building foundations (?). Could the beginning of our bridge be iminent ?

ParticipantAre U2 going to need a studio in three/four years time. Surely the African Queen will be out of bombastic stadium dross by then. Then again, look at the Stones (or Status Quo) !
Rusty Cogs
ParticipantThere’s currently about five cranes on site, all dealing with the construction of the PWC offices (fronting on to the Liffey) and the apartments behind. The site of the National Conference centre is currently being used as a storage area for building materials.

Did you say you had news about the Spencer Dock development ?

yes but it is not impossible . just a little bit of effort . such plates don’t have to be very big to be readable, not if they are made of the similar shiny material to signposts.
As a cyclist myself i know all too well of the crazy dangerous things cyclists do.
I don’t think the gardai would be allowed to simply collect the hundreds of wrecked bicycles . Even if they were allowed they won’t do it as it would cost them a fair bit to dispose of them all. they would want to be able to charge the owners.
with all the computers and things around , a fairly simple system for registring you bicycle could be put in place at modest cost.
In fairness, where are you going to mount a plate that will always be visibe and large enough to be photographed by a camera (whilst in motion) ?
Let the council collect the bikes. As I said, I’d start with the obviously trashed ones. Then move on to the ones that are locked to (non bike specific) street furnature. You could give them a bit of notice with a tag or an advertisement in the paper. If you got rid of all the abandoned bikes it would clean up the look of the streets a fair bit IMHO. It’s not a matter of clearing every bike off the street. Just the ones that are obviously going nowhere. Can’t be that difficult surely ?
And I think that Kevin st. auction is recovered stolen goods etc. not bikes formerly locked around the city.

seems like a good idea,
if bicyles had small license plate you could easily remove the wrecked bicycles locked all over the city, and either charge the owner for getting rid of them , or return them to the owner.
I really don’t see this happening, where are you going to mount a plate big enough to be seen by cameras which wouldn’t be obscured by the actual cyclist, his coat, bag etc. I can’t see seven year old kids heading down to Store Street to get their plates mounted to their bikes.
I would like all the abandoned bikes to be removed from the city though. They could start by taking all the wrecked ones. Whilst doing that they can tag all the rest, If they are still there in a month then take them too. In an ironic twist, I some times have to cycle around Dublin looking for a space to park my bike.

I cycled right through it the other day- met some kids from the Ringsend flats across the lock who were looking to get their horses back. So not all ‘just yuppie housing’, at least not yet.:)Thinking about the boardwalk idea some more – even just a 100m stretch at these warehouses – I think it could really work.
I love it when the bike side and the conservation side of my brain don’t fight.]If you built a stretch of board walk around the back of those buildings it would become a haven for the types who currently destroy the amenity up on Eden Quay. With the building as shelter behind them that strech of board walk would become a complete no go zone. There’s already often a group of day time drinkers at the city side of the warehouses. I’ve walked up the north quays only to observe female members of the troop half way down the stone steps urinating in to the Liffey. The idea of turning them in to some sort of arcade of shops is just not going to happen as they are pinned between a busy road and the river. About all you could do with them is hollow them out and put in a glass roof. But to be honest, I can just see the people who would use it most already.

ParticipantWarehouses Shmarehouses. They have to go, They totally disrupt the flow of foot and pedal trasport down the quays by essentially squeezing two in to one. Coming off the cyclepath on to the road and into traffic is quite dangerous. Because of the buildings all the pedestrians walk in the cyclepath knowing they will have to get around those buildings. I can’t see them ever being developed in to anything as there would be no parking in the area. The two restaurants on the north campsire have a hard enough time drumming up business. A board walk around them would be possible for pedestrians, (bikes could use the new path) but I really don’t see this happening. To be honest, I don’t see boardwalks coming down the quays at all as it would disrupt the docking of any boats which the DDDA seem to encourage.
By the by, the DDDA are not in the building with the sloped glass roof. That’s the new McCann Fitzgearld building which has yet to be opened (I’m guessing Qtr 4). The DDDA are further down the Quays, in which building I’m not sure. And they’re old offices should definately go pronto.

ParticipantI work right beside the proposed location and I can confirm that there is absolutely no sign of any work going on. I’ll post here as soon as I see anything.

ParticipantThis arguement is really going nowhere as we’ve no idea if the Garda in question was fighting crime or queuing for the donut shop.

ParticipantIt’s still there by the way. Had a look at it last night, Pretty small, did it really replace some plaque for the chime in the slime ? A very neat fit if it did, whomever must have measured up first. V. bizarre.

A bit of activity around the Point today (and a board has appeared mentioning something about Point Village)… looks like it may be starting…
Does anyone know exactly how much of the land around the Point grounds that Crosbie owns? Does he own the site to the left on the river front?
I believe so, I was around the back entrance to the site on Sunday and that white building to the left of the point is just a facade with a large tract of temporary car park behind it.

ParticipantThe site is also being used as an access and spoilage site for the widening of East Wall Rd so I don’t see anything happening until that’s complete which will coincide with the opening of the Port Tunnel. My guess, October.
As for starting Merchants Gate, if so much as a theodolite makes it on site in 2006 I’ll eat my DDDA Newsletter.
