the pictures of summerhill are heartbreaking. 🙁 even in a ruinous state georgians seem to retain there dignity.

After seeing the irresponsible plans favoured for the luas connection route im now of the opinion that a complete rethink is needed. I was in favour of a westland row route but am now of the opinion that none of the listed routes best serve what is trying to be achieved.
The main reason for my change in view has come after seeing plans for the lucan luas line. Two termini are possible: either a bizarre loop around stephens green or an ugly pole heavy terminus in college green. Looking at the rpa map of the scheme you have the strong possibility of two luas lines (Green and Lucan) terminating within 600 yards of each other. My suggestion is to link these two lines.
    Reasons being:

1)Both metro and interconnector will link the green and red lines
    2) A Bridge at hawkins street would be an irresponsible and arrogant decision
    3) The practical alternative to hawkins is o’connell bridge/street causing major disruption
    4) Due to the dimensions of both college green and wmorel st, i feel neither should be used
    5) The one way marlborough system would be confusing and difficult for future integration and expansion

    So heres my idea:
Continue Green Luas up Dawson Street, left onto Nassau St and continue up Suffolk St.
Then turning down church lane (if its wide enough, or trinity st) to dame street connecting with lucan line.
Stops at Dawson St, Suffolk St (again if wide enough) and College green/Bank.
This would of course mean Dublin Bus would have to stop using suffolk st/church lane but a useful link from dame st to stephens green is created without disruption to college green/lower grafton street

It will be very interesting to see how this development will affect the neighbouring streets and this part of the inner city..particularly at night.
Im talking in particular about liffey street, the lotts, great strand street and abbey streets upper and middle.
While the potential of liffey and middle abbey streets is obvious, the potential of a street such as great strand street is, in my opinion, just as great.
unlike a lot of people, i dont consider temple bar a failure or a vision of all thats wrong with the new ireland. As such, i can see huge potential in developing strand street, the lotts and a possible link street to middle abbey (adjacent to jervis luas stop) as a pedestrianised area of restaurants, bars and speciality shops. If the idea of temple bar north is off putting think more of a continuation of the small italian quartier bloom which cuts across strand street.
The bigger picture of this may be the creation of a lively / multi purpose(?) area day and night straddling the pedestrian friendly quays…but thats another story

why the need for a pretentious name. ‘the coombe’ or ‘the liberties’ works fine. A little more substance is whats needed, not fancy rebranding.

half of upper o connell unoccupied and they act as if they have to sqeeze the last bit of retail space out of the street at the expense of the space and aspects the new layout should provide.
Oh, and most side streets with huge potential (sackville pl, nth princes, middle abbey st) almost devoid of people. If they want to see if these things work place them on a side street (within yards and view of o connell st)that needs a bit of help and please dont use o connell st as an experiment…..or worse turn it into another grattan bbridge set up. 😡

Just a fanciful suggestion  . But if Arnotts did want to do something on a ‘New York’ ,ie BIG scale, perhaps the new street could run east west from the cul de sac that is Nth Princes St right through to Liffey Street.
Imagine if you will a Milan style ‘Galleria’ running through terminated by a spanking new building on the liffey street end (already having Clerys terminating the Other end). A monumental entrance on Nth Princes, A giant dome in the middle with the Henry St- Abbey Street Mall running North south at this point.
Dont Know how much it would mess up their current layout but look at the advantages:
    Princess Street Regenerated.
Arnotts Get Direct Link to O’ Connell Street.
    Dublin gets Shopping Landmark.
New Street gets a roof 🙂
Again just a dream, have a feeling this is just a little bit too New York.

When you look at the wider view of the quay the design of the building (in relation to its neighbours) seems to be doing one thing more than anything else. It seems to be trying to make an architectural unit out of the buildings from the corner of o connell st down to (but not including) the seamens institute. ie The new building is the new centrepiece in this terrace, flanked by two 3 storey buildings on either side and then matching the height of the irish nationwide (4 storey) on one end and then the other 4 storey on the other end. A basic classical design. Make any sense to anyone else

there was a small laneway (greggs lane)leading off o’connell street at this point, following a line similar to the angle at which the academy hotel now fronts the steet. At this time sean mc dermott strett (glouchester street)terminated at a church located in the middle of what is now cathal brugha. The Gardners were originally buried in this church. Think the church was knocked about this time for structural reasons creating the new approach to o connell street.

yeah, but the other two thirds of the country dont live within 20 miles of each other……50% plus of the population live in leinster, building it outside of dublin is at least debateable, building it outside of leinster is just ridiculous.

unoriginality (or rather re-using designs) is now commonplace in dublin. As has been discussed before on this site; blackhall bridge and macken st. bridge (calatrava designs) are both copies of earlier bridges in europe…..i just wonder how much dr calatrava receives for such laziness………(this is not an attack on the bridge design).

i suppose on the surface it does….but im not saying move people to some new town in the middle of nowhere, im saying rehouse them in newly developed inner city areas…. The derelict spaces all over central dublin can be developed, keeping the important inner city community and freeing up the current council flat lands for either redevelopment or sale. Many derelict areas are in council hands (eg marrowbone lane) …… doesnt it just seem like a waste to have these areas used as depots for the council.

contd…these are prime inner city residential sites…surely its in the city councils interest to get rid of these eyesores and sell the land to people capable of inivative design and planning…the council can cash in …DO IT.

has anyone noticed the current ‘improvements around the summerhill / corporation street areas…..Much of the proposed improvements will only update buildings that should be knocked..eg Liberty house flats. Apologies to anyone who may live in these flats or areas but this whole area(bar a handful of buildings) should be levelled.

if you are looking for information on the gardiners, the best source for this(or any other aspect of architecture, planning etc) is in a book titled ‘Dublin 1660 – 1860’ by maurice craig. The book is no longer in print but there is one copy of this book in the dublin library system (currently in my bedsit…it will be back with them in the next few days.) The book is incredibly well researched and has everything you need to know about the gardiners, their estate and ultimate downfall.

Maybe those behind the design of the new Tara Street station should tackle the loopline bridge aswell. The obvious problem with doing anything with the bridge is the interuption to this critical transport route. If, however, the proposed new dart line further down the river goes ahead (ddda plans), couldnt something serious then be done with the loopline bridge. ie Remove it or replace it

contd.. Spencer Dock, while impressive in their own right, have not taken advantage of the possibility of building beyond the 5 storey norm. looking downstream from O’Connell Bridge it would be nice to see some evidence of this new “World class city quarter” and not just a view blocked by that awful loopline bridge.
