RoyParticipant
Think Pearse Street or even Dorset Street might pip it for length…..
As for the crappy developments on the street from Lower Gardiner Street Flats to that apartment block on the Parnell Street corner, what would anyone recommend as being better, given both the need for social housing in this particular area, and the general demand for accomodation near the city centre? Would it have been utterly wrong to “do a Mountjoy Square” on it, i.e. Georgian replicas?RoyParticipantWas in Antwerp recently, some parts could still do with some attention, but considering that it’s golden ages is longer passed than Dublin’s, they’ve kept a decent amount of the town pleasant and interesting. The main railway station in particular is terrific.
RoyParticipantI have yet to have notice any areas of mass social houseing here in Düsseldorf (albeit a wealthier and smaller city than Dublin), maybe because it seems that most housing is of an above-the-shop nature. Could upper storeys of buildings with ground floor shops be a solution to housing problems in Dublin? I’ve heard something about an above the shop programme, what that all about?
RoyParticipantSo is there any hope for the Northside? Despite the destruction, there are still potentially magnificent Georgian streets: Lower Gardiner Street, Denmark Street, Belvidere Place, North Great Georges Street, Henrietta Street etc.
As for the O’Connell Street regeneration, is it plausible that it can be restored to fashionability, when, as someone else on this board has mentioned, within 200 metres of the Parnell Monument exist some of the city’s most deprived living quarters? I´d be very interested in hearing what people think about the future of the northside.RoyParticipantJ.Seerski, is the thesis you mentioned available from a website? If not, would it be possible to upload it?
RoyParticipantToo right, Dublin doesn´t need these monstrosities. They should be detennanted the same way as the tennements themselves were. There must be a better way (both socially and aesthetically) of providing social housing. And as a resident of the northside, it certainly doesn’t do the vision of the Gardiners et al any justice. I live (when in Dublin) around the corner from Henrietta Street, but have a better view of the Upper Dorset Street Flats. Still, it keeps the rent down…
