Oh they went into farming – economic development – community design… all very interesting when you’re 13!
It’s in my folkes house… probably sandwiched between “the last whole earth catalog” and “Tintin destination Moon”!

Hey Fin .. another thing that would free the design up would be the one third gravity enviornment… someone like lebbeus woods would have a field day..
I bought a book during the eighties which had detailed plans for settling on Ganymede and Callisto … I think.. very boring book but I liked the ideas. I’ll see if I can find it somewhere.

That’s unusual that the list is out so early… is it part of a press release or will that all happen at publication time?
Interesting results — sometimes I think the AAI awards reflect a practices manifesto rather than the building itself… which could be a difference to be expanded on… especially with other awards gaining ground.

OK I think you put your finger on what the bee in my bonnet is – The RIAI is a professional organisation – and has specific ideas on how one works as a professional. This works fine in most cases – but why should it have a say for instance in how college courses are run? Surley an architectural degree could be used for many different applications within, and associated with architecture.
This is a hobbyhorse of mine so please excuse the rant… I think education should remove itself slightly more from the demands of the professions and employers.. as they are so railroaded into a specific way of working. This disencourages any change coming from the bottom. I’m speaking in general now and have gone off course slightly but I think it is relevant…. we are looking to the professional bodies for guidance as there is no one else to take up the challenge.

The RIAI represents professionals and accredits Educational institutions – it has set standards for good practice and has been very good in doing all this – i just think it would be a shame to entrust them with regulating all architects in this country in the long run. How many times have people asked for outside bodies to regulate previously self policing bodies.
Don’t forget, the RIAI is primarily a proffesional organisation representing its members as the main priority. People who commision architects and the general public are secondary.
Don’t get me wrong.. i think they have extremely high standards and have been a huge positive influence on the proffesion in this country… but it would be good to clarify lines and duties so that regulation becomes a broader ground that encompasses people who can’t work within the RIAI view of the proffesion as it is.

These are your opinions SW fair enough, but don’t you think that there should be a government appointed accrediting body and not just the RIAI? A bit of diversity in the proffesional practice methods would be seriously welcome.

I think this is true – the govt however are going to start to officially accredit those qualified to a certain standard soon. It seems to me that they will let the RIAI control this which is the easy way out for them – there should be an official state body overseeing this.

On the other hand – when you perform a function that is covered by legislation, standard contract or insurance, a lot of privaate institutions will ask for professional accreditation. ie certs of complience – building societies will look for your qualifiaction as well as your insurance status.

This is just from my experience – never did my part 3 so I stand to be corrected..

Paul try Hacketts Photo Dept on Baggot St. They can run your strip through but I’m not sure how they charge… Most places charge for individual scans…. or see if your flatbed has a batch scan function..

For it’s here I am an Orangeman, just come across the sea

For singing and for dancing, I hope that I’ll please thee,

I can sing and dance with any man, as I did in days of yore.

And its on the twelfth I long to wear the Sash My Father wore.

    Chorus

It is old but it is beautiful and it’s colours they are fine.

It was worn at Derry, Aughrim, Enniskillen and the Boyne.

My Father wore it as a youth in the bygone days of yore

And its on the twelfth I long to wear, The Sash My Father wore.

For it’s now I’m going to leave you, good luck to you I’ll say,

And when I’m on the ocean deep, I hope for me you”ll pray

I’m going to my native land, to a place they call Dromore.

Where on the twelfth I long to wear the Sash My father wore.

    Chorus

Whenever I come back again my brethren here to see,

I hope to find old Orange style, they will always welcome me.

My favorite tune’s ‘Boyne Water’. but to please me more and more,

And make my Orange Heart full glad with the Sash My Father wore.

    Chorus

I agree – Most of the bridges over the Liffey have the structural elements below – this is a pile on the virtual passage that runs along the quays and over the river.

I used to work in the Munich Olympic Park – Any published drawings or photos don’t do it justice – Very heavy cabling but taken as a whole, the way it covers a swimming pool – Main Stadium and indoor arena – plus outdoor circulation areas – shows how versitile this system of enclosure is – lending a cohesion and flow to a huge area.

Well the obvious one is the new bridge in Dundrum, but I have recently put up a new clothes line in my back garden if you’re intrested….

I had to photograph Castletown Laois, which was last year’s winner for Super Valu.
I’m not sure of the criteria but it was an odd choice. There was one main st. with a green – a convent and cemetary off this street – and a bit of grass with a mill beside the river which was at a remove from the village.
It was a nice place and the people were really friendly but I couldn’t see what the deal was.
A couple of things were apparent after a while though –

A well motivated group of people pushed the tidy towns agenda in the village –
They had entrance “markers” to the village – one a “failte” flowerbed – the other some monoliths with the town’s name… It had recently been bypassed and I suppose it’s interesting how they handled that.
It is a village whose attributes are quite removed from whatever physical fabric it has – the main thing that struck me was a cohesiveness within the locals – but that was probably due to the fact that their hurling team was in the county final that weekend!

…. or if there aren’t many examples of new work actually engaging ( rather than avoiding ) historical walls – – – how about looking at other similar structures like elevated brick/stone railways such as S Bahn in Berlin?…

There’s bound to be some Spanish stuff.. didn’t Torres do something involving a canopy?
And how about that architect in Spain/Italy who stripped all the trees off a “cashel” site and inserted a new lift shaft in?
