Long article.. well researched … coming from a particular camp though.. good mix of figures and opinion. I think some people get hysterical however about keeping the landscape wild… it’s obvoius we need a good organisation at the helm of development work .. taking roads and housing industry etc.. under its wing… some hope at the moment anyway when the govt pays no attention to its spatial strategy with the decentalisation proccess.
Anyway… with compliance with EU pollution laws etc I don’t see why we can’t develop substantially taking care as we go… problem seems to be that the agenda of the “anti-current way of working” bodies seem to be a bit extreme… I don’t have a problem with Soutwarks (Dallas?) dotted around .. they’re quite funny… you get them a lot in Cavan.

As late as 1987… “modern Architecture in Europe” – De Witt……

“Ireland is a relatively poor country which, during the last 150 years, has suffered revolution, civil war, famine and mass emigration. Today its population is about half that in 1835, and its most talented and ambitious young architects, such as Kevin Roche, often feel that they must emigrate to succeed.”

… One building only mentioned… New Library Trinity College… ABK

The Autochrome proccess, which was the first industrial colour proccess… was patented by Lumiere in the first ten years of the 20th C. I saw a programme recently where two women french photographers made a trip to ireland before the 1st World War… using Autochrome. These were mainly of the West of Ireland but there might be some of Dublin… I think it’s the Albert Kahn collection… Paris.

If this is to help you in your own descision… then I would say that no matter what people will tell you.. you will take the plunge based on your heart … not your head. It’s a basic need or instinct which leads to setting up on your own which is unavoidable and will happen if the felling is strong enough….
Don’t forget you’re never on your own … and it’s quite likely that you will need to employ other people to help you with your business.

As far as I remember… the junction of little Mary St to Mary st… where the AIB is… was at the point of connection of two estates… I think there was meant to be some sort of continuity but was cocked up in its realisation…. (An Meitheal Gaeleach strikes (A Kevin myers quip… btw anyone read today’s about Mayo? V funny))… This comes from a history of urbanism class more than 10 years ago so memory is hazy…
All the same … why not celebrate not getting our act together with something perplexing and mediocre?

If you’re coming in to the centre of town by car along Dorset St… and miss your turn down Gardiner St.. you inevitably end up crawling down Capel St.. as you can’t turn on to O’Connell St via Nrth Fredrick St anyomre…. They would have to perform a miracle of traffic planning if they were to get that street pededtrianised… and what about the furniture shops?

Funny I was about to say it should be spelled lois but I see there are lots of variations … lios … lis… used as a prefix sometimes in modern placenames… meaning a fort .. generally of residence that can date from bronze age to iron age or later… the ones that would have had use up to recent times would have had churches and graveyards in them. The early christians appropriated the same forts that their countrymen would have used… secular uses overlapping with the religious use of the site.
Does it have any signs of building (church) on it? Sometimes you will find a church with a small graveyard … but you can count on it that the actual burial area including unbaptised babies etc was far bigger… or a specific area outside the main enclosure.
There are lots of books that would have info on this type of structure… Try “Pre Christian Ireland” by Peter Harbison Thames and Hudson for some general info.. good read too. Also most Counties have an Archeological inventory published or in production… you could have a look in the local library for that ….

What a great idea! Unfortunately a lot of the hype and publicity of the current awards is fuelled by contractors and suppliers trying to get their services featured for futher business… not to mention architects. There mightn’t be a commercial imperitave to it.

HOWEVER.. I’d like to nominate my home… a 1950’s corpo dwelling in Crumlin… Brilliant design for low cost living… low maintenance and lovely proportions inside.. still doing the bizz.

The church is the same all right.. lovely area.. there was a local fete going on also the last time I was there… the dull church is designed by Palladio no less!
    Kind of agree though.

I have some pics of the chapel attached to the scuola san pascuale in Venice .. where Katie Holten represented Ireland in the Biennale last year… were the venitian charitable societies at least partly secular? The church seems to have historical dominance over most public buildings in Venice.

jspruit…. your questions are to the point! Many young architects supping expensive lattes on Dublin streets after having put in a fair whack of overtime could be asking the same.. But a happy lifestyle!… can you buy that? 🙂
