Hi Christian … try http://www.riai.ie for the main professional institute…. there seems to be lots of work although the cost of living is way higher than Germany.
roskavParticipantBTW Graham … that pic is a combination of two shots side by side…. couldn’t get it all in one shot!…. Actually I still missed bits on either side…. plus had to do on a Sunday to escape the cars parked in front …. interesting place to stand still for a bit … everyone’s in a hurry…. bar those hanging around the entrance to the courts!
roskavParticipantHere are a couple more… you can choose the project “Dundalk Town Hall” on the drop down menu on the Architecture section of the site for all the photos!

http://www.roskavanagh.com/php/user_system.php?action=view_photo&resource_id=1332roskavParticipantScuse… but could you elaborate on your idea of Irish Vernacular? … I can see however that you mightn’t like to fix any definitions on this…. might spoil the thrust of your argument …. At least I think you’re arguing something…. or just looking for one?
roskavParticipantAnd I don’t think they are Oak trees either.
roskavParticipantTarzan was a reference to the ever elusive elephant’s graveyard…. The house in leitrim qualifies under the term Irish Vernacular in form mainly… in that the last buildings to be built in this country which used mainly local materials tended to be small stone cotages. … You might want to add in turf sod houses to that too. So yes the house I posted the link to has a reference in form to the broadly percieved originator of Irish vernacular…. but if you want to take the idea of Vernacular as being a building made from locally available materials.. to a design influenced by the local environment… then you might as well look at a semi – d made with blocks from Chadwicks and PVC windows from the workshop down the street.
roskavParticipantI think tarzan discovered it once .. but it was buried under too many elephant tusks…. On the other hand … somewhere in the wilds of Leitrim…

roskavParticipantYou have to fiddle with navigation on the site a bit … I can’t give a direct link to the search results for the project … but here’s one to the facade shot of the newly restored Town Hall by Van Dijk Architects.

roskavParticipantThe great Palm house was just an off the peg greenhouse apparantly… but one thing you notice when you go is the economy of the engineering… the opw did a fab job on restoring it… the exterior walkway works also as a retaining ring beam…. v cool.. I’m sure they won’t mind me posting these….
PS I can’t understand why it’s being used as a musical venue at the mo…. those kind of curves are a nightmare for accoustics..
roskavParticipantHoray! Someone made a critical comment!
roskavParticipantWas down in Grand Canal Basin last week .. lovely day … sat on the quayside by Hannover Quay and had my lunch. That place is going to be really nice once it’s finished. A friend was saying it would be ideal to have a killer whale or two in the basin…. can you imagine…. Feeding time….
roskavParticipantWell films can be fantastic in how they reflect or push the boundaries of architecture.. in fact I’m trying to remember the name of a sci fi film made in the 40s which has a distinctly Fosteresque bent to it…. I think its the one where another earth is discovered on the other side of the sun… but I’m not sure.
With stage design .. it’s on a lower budget … but less prone to constraints.. and the audience generally participates directly in the construct.. as opposed to seeing it through a series of chosen camera angles.. there is also something about being there that gives you an insight into the body and it’s immediate designed environment… anyway .. there was a production by Bedrock some years ago called Quay West (translation from the french) where the audience sat on a scaffold around the stage… it was one of my first theatre photo jobs.. and I was struck how relevant the work was to understanding architecture.roskavParticipantI’ve seen that building in Cahirsiveen…. it’s just missing a kitchen sink… how about… http://www.architectstm.com/
roskavParticipantStandard 19th C Town … with a lot of large warehouse shops around the perimeter… similar to galway in that respect..
roskavParticipantInteresting! Hadn’t heard of it before…. you should go on “who wants to be a millionaire”!
roskavParticipantInteresting… I wonder what the tall dark building just to the right of what is now Govt Buildings is….?
roskavParticipantwow has anyone looked at niall Mcloughlin’s site… lovely pic on the front…. peabody interesting..
