HORAY! What ….. a passionate intelligent opinion expressed succinctly!
roskavParticipantClare Co Co are going to publish a rural housing guide soon
roskavParticipantCheck out http://www.hegartyarchitects.com/ .. a Derry practice doing lots of work locally.
roskavParticipant’cause it’s twice as good as the M25?
roskavParticipantThis happened before with the Carlow Visual Arts Centre competition… seems to be the norm!
roskavParticipantroskavParticipantNot sure if this link will work…. It is on the site of the former Devoy Barracks… if you’re coming from dublin.. turn right at the junction off the main st in Naas just at the other end of the town.. before the junction for the hospital…. it’s on your left.

roskavParticipantChecked out Iveagh Baths.. think the only remotley Nouveau thing is part of the facade… would people agree it’s more Arts and Crafts than Nouveau? Still have to have a closer look at Avalon but not expecting a Damascus experience…. Did the shoot … It should be a good show… It’s Oscar Wilde at the end of his life in a Paris cafe (hence the nouveau) …. he casts the waiters in a performance of The Importance of being Earnest while he plays lady Bracknell…It starts in July… I’ll keep you posted!
roskavParticipantThanks again folkes … nice photos of pharmacy Paul … have to go and look! … Also thanks shaun.. It never occured to me … and I drive past it at least 5 times a week… Doh. I’ll have a look inside if I can.. just for interest though, as I carried out the threatened BBC 80’s set decoation this morning .. the frondy plant will now re-locate to the bathroom at home… so there is a positive outcome!
roskavParticipantThanks for your help everybody but It’s definitely Laura Ashley Wallpaper .. a folding screen, table and chair…. with a frondy plant…. The trick will be not to make it like “The restaurant at the end of the universe” or some similar BBC set from the eighties. I think it is amazing though that in Dublin .. the whole aspect of Nouveu seems to be in decoration rather than the main substance of a building. I’ve seen the Horta house in Brussels and I can’t say that I like it that much…. quite dark considering all the guff about light… the nicest place is the open stairwell…. There was a fantastic cafe in La Rochelle…. huge (quite low) open space with the columns seeming to spread like papyrus as they hit the ceiling. I remember thinking that Bewleys must have been based on something similar.
roskavParticipantOh dear.. yes I remember now notjim… hope you didn’t get too many slaps! That created a bit of a ruckus allright… I had to show the copyright card.
roskavParticipantRather sinister Notjim…. not sure how to answer that one! I’m looking at getting some nice wallpaper and a potted plant at this stage… or a cheap filght to Brussels or Paris.
roskavParticipantActually … hadn’t seen an image of it in years… here’s one of the original…. not remotely Nouveau…. teeny bit of Deco.
roskavParticipantThanks Phil.. are there pictures of it anywhere?
roskavParticipantWhere could I find that article by TdeP Fergus?

roskavParticipantThanks Daniel … I’ve never been to the Loos bar… your suggestion has made me want to check it out. Where in Trinity is it exactly and how do you get in?…. Also Wynn’s Hotel, when you consider how it looks outside, potentially would be ideal… Have you ever been inside though? The best part is the (v small) lobby. The two main public areas have been decorated similarly to a lot of family run country hotels … you know with terra-cotta carpet and v light timber bar …. with the odd bit of brass thrown in…. Think of that hotel in Ballinasloe … Hayden’s is it? I’ll check out the bar today if I can… Thanks!…. Also thanks to the other suggestors…. Davy Byrnes isn’t really close though…and I think Bewley’s off Fleet St is now closed.. also not really Art Nouveau… but lovely for taking portraits allright… Beautiful light coming down off one side with some yellow light too though the stained glass.

roskavParticipantChecked Bruxelles out…. intreresting tilework! hmm Lettering is right but the interior is still victorian all the same…. Is there no Art nouveau at all in Dublin?
PS Harry Clarke window in Bewleys is fine but does anyone know of a similar window that actually gets daylight?…. and that goes down to somewhere near ground level?
Ta!
roskavParticipantNever thought of there .. I’ll have a look .. thanks a mill!

roskavParticipantTry the Design Studies course in DIT .. It’s a two year evening course with every third Saturday inlcuding Tues and Thurs evenings. You study… Basic drawing/theory..Graphic design.. Engineering.. Transport Design… Product design.. Interior design… Architecture .. Landscape. It only touches on each subject but it’s fun and gets you thinking in design trems.
Only problem is that the next intake is in 2007roskavParticipantThe cost of living…. well I was in Berlin recently and it was like I had just taken paracetamol for a headache that I had for so long I had forgotten how sore it was…. I suppose it was not only a relief of pressure on my wallet but it was a general relaxing of pressure that made me realise that (in Dublin) we are at the forefront of a huge bulge in inflation and even the rats wear designer sports shoes. (The rats in the rat race that is!) Funny… not ha ha.
