ParticipantI remember the derelict buildings of Christchurch place from when I was younger. Does anybody remember a factory/warehouse where Jury’s Inn is now. It had “BE_AB__” on the side the _ indicate where the letters had fallen off – the font it was in was very 50s sort of like the old ESB lettering. Any answers to that one.
I also remember Wood Quay/Winetavern Street being just hoardings. Dublin was so grim then wasn’t it?

ParticipantYes the fire service hold the codes and emergency overides to all the systems in Dublin

ParticipantThats because we Irish are great at begrudging and badmouthing everything. I think that we cant believe in something until it happens, Frank McDonald is quite correct about the lack of fanfare. But look at what happens about infrastructure being built in this country –
1) Proposal stage – comments of “it’ll never happen”
2) Vested interests stage – nobody does anything for the good of their town or country and tries to screw as much compensation out of the infrastructural development, or the AA (selfish bastard in a car society) moan about roads being dug up for the Luas and they cant drive everywhere anymore.
3) Huge delay due to selfish interests stage (I think that speaks for itself) by which time costs rise 10 fold, dodgy rezoning decisions etc
4) Scaled down version is built – starts off well but rapidly becomes overloaded due to the fact that it wasnt built right in the first place (cf M50 Motorway)
5) People moan about it the – “I knew it would be a disaster stage”Hence people do not want to build anything in this country.
Sometimes you just want to give up.

ParticipantWhy shouldnt it be built in Dublin – putting it in Galway would not make any economic sense – and would overload the 1 rail link to the city so that would be a non starter. Also if they want to have concerts there who is going to put up all the people who want to go theire from Dublin.
And its not in Berties constituency either.
Another reason why Croker is not suitable is the fact that its owned by a bunch of Bigots who wont allow soccer to be played there.

ParticipantGreg- stop knocking the Taoiseach’s Stutter (which no-one has heard since the early 90’s anyway). Not that I am being pc or anything – its not really a valid point (Just as much as Ruari Quinn’s and Michael Noonans Baldness isn’t either).
I agree with the stuff about the Stadium though – but I think that going out to Blanchardstown for an international will reduce some of the fun and air of tradition around a rugby match.

ParticipantDont blame CIE, blame the users.

ParticipantNot much – it just looks like a 60s block encased in glass (as if to preserve it, like a Museum exhibit) and a miniture version of the Spencer Dock Conference centre next to it.
Boo hiss I say. How about start again with something different.

ParticipantYes the present building is awful but the wider sonsideration must be given to the fact that it is one less cultural institution on the Northside. Surely this will impact on the O’Connell Street renewal!
Rory W
ParticipantAnybody know when work is starting there?

ParticipantSorry, Im just suffering from the Irish Times letters page which always supports (by means of publishing) letters that attack the spire (Waste of Money) Want a statue of Jesus (or one on the hill of Howth – Rio style), or the just plain barking mad spleen venting of Michael O’Nuaillain (nepotism). Actually those of us who contribute to Archeire/Archforums (which one is it) that like the spire should all write a letter and see if it gets published (those ones that are signed by groups always get published).

ParticipantYes and the original steel frame exposed in areas (the first steel framed building in the British Isles).
Love the place, way better than the Hopstore.

ParticipantI assume you are talking about the new Cow’s lane and not Copper alley (the laneway running behind and parallel to Dame street.
Both could do with “livening up”

Participantyeah lets give everyone another candle.
Why shouldn’t Dublin get this monument? And the people were welcome to submit a design – as the bitterness of Micheal O’Nullain (non-architect) shows. I for one am sick of the lets give a bit to everyone type mentality, lets spend it on the poor, lets build a new cat and dog home. What the hell is wrong with spending money on improving the atmosphere & environment of O’Connell street.
I am delighted with the amount of people who have been saying how pleasant it is to walk down the boardwalk (the other project for Dublin).
Sick of the Moaning Minnies!!!! I am delighted the Monument of light is going ahead. An I am sure that when it is built the reaction will be very positive. Can somebody tell we why this is a waste of money? Is all art a waste of money.

ParticipantTrue, sadly true
Dublin will dribble away to the sea

ParticipantNo Greg you are right – I remember the design being in the property section of the Irish Independent a few years ago, there was awnings along the Mary street frontage (before Brown Thomas had theirs) and the niches along the Jervis Street side were going to be opened up with windows put in. There was going to be an entrance on the corner of Mary and Jervis Streets, the upper floors were also going to become retail and the surface carpark at the back was going to be redeveloped. And yes Sam stephenson was the Architect. From the drawings it looked great. I dont know why the redevelopment didn’t take place but I think it was down to the BHS building on O’Connell Street becoming available so that became the flagship store.
Still plenty of time and money around now for them to do it.

ParticipantIn two words “bloody hell”!! I like it
Rory W
ParticipantBelieve me a lick of paint would not have helped that place. Brown pebbledash (even the words make me shudder). They really needed to demolish most of that place it was bloody awful. Anybody know what the plans for the new place are like?
I think I heard that the frontage was going to overlook the Merrion Road. Sounds interesting.

ParticipantDoes anybody else agree that MICHEÃL Ó NUALLÃIN is a nut case who the Irish Times devotes far too much column inches to. His rantings become more and more deluded each time they publish his letters. Perhaps this is the case because he is Flann O’Briens brother and all that. But more and more it sounds like sour grapes from someone whos entry (which seemed to look forward to the 1950s) to the competition was not selected.
A touch of the Al Gore’s here.
