ParticipantJames, do you write speaches for Tony Blair – so many soundbites, so little time.
Seriously folks, what is wrong with our psyche as a nation – the Georgian Houses were seen as a sign of British Repression and yet we want all our new buildings to look like that. Anything modern or tall is shot down. People say that we should have a city like Paris, nobody knows or cares who was overshadowed by the new buildings that were developed by Haussmann. We have a begrudgery attitude in this town that means developments are held up for years by Nimbys, bananas, and greedy sods who will allow nothing to be build until they get money. Why the hell does it take so long for any infrastructure to be built in this town? Because everyone wants their 30 pieces of silver before they allow anything to be done (plus the useless corrupt government that we have).
It makes me sick of this town!

ParticipantIs it Stack A in th Ifsc?

ParticipantWell kefu it is a Zoe development but they got the site from the corpo on condition they had an architectural competition for the site. I think it is Grafton Architects who did the design here. As opposed to the usual Zoe/Fabrizia (I think they call themselves that as well sometimes, same logo though) job of the builder designing it themselves (often Liam Carroll himself). As for what is going on on the Abbey street site I agree, it looks dirt cheap and not at all “designed”. In terms of this area a number of questions arise – should this be an office development in what is now a mostly retail/residential area (Its a bit like putting an office block in Temple Bar). Secondly, Isn’t it about time that Dublin Bus built something on what is essentially an unused site (especiall since all the buses have now moved out of Abbey Street to Allow LUAS construction work. Thirdly, isn’t it about time that the buildings (from around 1986) on the corner of Liffey Street and Abbey Street (the former EBS branch) were demolished and replaced with something a bit taller. Two storeys looks qiute ludicrous at this point (and any other) in the city centre CBD. This would also hide the view of the Jervis Centre car park and the M&S loading depot – surely this can only be a good thing!

ParticipantHad a look at the site – project looks interesting, however as a former ranelagh resident I think the problem with the Triangle was the contents of the buildings around it, all seemed to shut up shop at 5:30 except for the chipper so there wasn’t much life in the Triangle (other than the angry Taxi queue from Night Owls – is that place closed now?). Plus the road there is incredibly busy on the way into town. My only concern with the design is that the Trianle may end up like the 5 Lamps Jnction on the North Strand (a bit barren looking).
Oh and love the way the before picture is in Black and White – makes the project look like it is adding colour to the drab lives of Dublin 6 residents…

ParticipantI seem to remember the bridge being for public transport use only when originally mooted. Hope that they go ahead and build the thing as the momementum that was around last year seems to have slowed consideribly. Has anyone else noticed that?
Paul can you fix that picture?
Rory W
ParticipantAbout time too – haven’t they been vacent for about 2 years? Also the building will probably look a lot beeter once it is occupied!

ParticipantKielys on Abbey stret is a new pub made from the remains of another that burnt down on the site.
My picks:
John Kehoes – Anne Street South
The International Bar – Wicklow Street
Neary’s – Chatham Street
Toners – Baggot Street
Slattery’s – Beggars Bush
Davy Byrnes
The Pav in TCD (summer only)
Chaplins – Hawkins StreetAnd some new ones:
The Capitol: Georges Street
Robert Reades: Store Street
Cocoon: Royal Hibernian Way
AKA: Wicklow Street
Gubu: Capel streetMy favorite pub of all was the much missed Crane on Crane Lane in Temple Bar – the licence from that is now the one for the Quays bar (bah humbug) the place was tiny, but had a great atmosphere. If you got the snug you were sorted for the night!
Ones to avoid:
Coyote Lounge -D’Olier Street
Excise Bar – IFSC 2
Q Bar
MacTurcaills of Hoggen Green (for F*ck sake)
ZanzibarI got a bad pint in Mulligans of Poolbeg Street and was ill for about 3 days afterwards so since then I have avoided it.

ParticipantArchers is continuing apace. Starting to look good!
Rory W
ParticipantI think I saw that Pat Liddy (I think) had written a book on this matter
Rory W
ParticipantDoes anybody agree that the lack of “camperile” building in the Smithfield complex is going to make the place seem more like a bleak wide road, rather than a public space?
Rory W
ParticipantAppearently the conversion of this building to apartments was well under way some were nearly ready for occupation (its Chaplegate by the way) I went to see some of the apartments there a while ago in the new blocks.
Actually this is more of a problem for the developer now – don’t think there is an Archer’s case here.
Rory W
ParticipantActually refering to an earlier note – the Bridge in St Stephen’s Green is actually named O’Connell Bridge. (i think thaty naming predated the Carlile bridge widening) – I believe the remains of Carlile Bridge are out in a Garden in Killiney
Rory W
ParticipantAccording to Frank mcDonald (in yesterday’s IT the bridge is now under construction
Rory W
ParticipantHmmmm…. Didn’t we have this forum about this time last year as well
Rory W
ParticipantNotice in The Irish Times today that they want to turn it into a cafe/bar – interesting???
Rory W
ParticipantVery true – for a graphic example of this go to the Harbourmaster in the IFSC. Very little English spoken by the staff and never the same people behind the bar two weeks running. Time was when pubs had unions (who trained up staff)and staff that took pride in what they did.
Rory W
ParticipantLads – I think we’re getting old.
Actually got a reasonable pint of Guinness in the Capitol bar on Stephen’s street, and AKA in Wicklow street. I think the craft of pouring a pint is gone – plus the fact that Guinness are pushing Cold flow which tastes awful.
You get a good Guinness in the Gravity Bar all the same.

ParticipantHow about putting Croke Park down the country – they have the parocial attitude already.

ParticipantHow about Dublin having the best buildings and not just the tallest. That would surely give us the primacy that we crave.
Rory W
ParticipantWasn’t the old Rowntree Mackintosh factory that was on this site(demolished during the 80s) about 6 storeys tall? Or maybe I was smaller then.
