ParticipantIs this Harcourt street (Stalinist style opposite the PoD & special branch HQ) or Harcourt Terrace (next to the canal and by that row of Regency style houses off Adelaide Road). The Harcourt Street Block could do with demolition to make it more attractive.
Rory W
ParticipantThe reason it doesn’t blend in as well as the museum of Scotland is that the stone is in contrast to the surrounding streetscape (brick) whereas the Edinburgh building uses the same material as the surrounding buildings
Rory W
ParticipantIt appears to cover a much larger area than the current Carlisle pier. The models don’t particularly help. Does anybody know quite how big this is?
Rory W
ParticipantThanks for the offer Paul but managed to confuse them with a digital camera. I got my shot eventually. You are spot on dc3 about them not being around when they are needed. There is one in particular (nickname Robocop) – takes his job waaaayyy too seriously. I suppose this is their “jobsworth” bit, where they can be “the enforcer”. And the best bit was when I asked to whom I should ask about permission to take a photo I was told in no uncertain terms that “It was not worth my while”. Wonderful!
Quite how this sort of attitude is going to help bring tourists into the area is beyond me

ParticipantO’Donoghues of Merrion Row has a rear courtyard too but gets packed at weekends in the summer
Rory W
ParticipantThank god you cleared that one up!!!

ParticipantAh the We (John Keatings) have moved sign has been up for years but the Pub/Restaurant opening 2002 is of more recent vintage. I did here from someone that work was about to start on this soon. Here’s hoping. As for the interior – the Ryans decor store ruined most of it.
On a different tack, have you noticed that they have started building something behind the Penney’s store (about time too) on Henry Street – does anybody know what they are building?
Rory W
ParticipantJohn Keatings have asign up saying that they are going to open a bar there next year
Rory W
ParticipantSorry – forgot to mention Hartigans at the bottom of Leeson Street. Definitely one of the best pubs around. Guinness is great, and Ma hartigan is definitely a character…
Rory W
ParticipantCertainly could. I was at my brother’s wedding in Norway last year and the place was spotless. On the train every piece of rubbish was collected and placed into 5 recycling bins that they had on each carriage. Kids used to collect the plastic bottles as you could get a 1 Krone (about 10p) refund on each bottle. As you said we could learn a lot.
Mind you they had plenty of bins everywhere, but if you couldn’t find one the people would actually carry the rubbish until the found one, unlike the ignorant masses over here…
Rory W
ParticipantThanks for clarifying that Paul, twas all a bit vague.
I know the building that they are on about. Not the tropical fruit company thank goodness, but having just moved down to the area (Winter garden – one of the best Apartment blocks I have seen in Dublin) I was sitting in the “Ocean” bar in the Millenium Tower and thinking how nice it would be to be able to walk all the way around the Grand Canal Basin but Harry Crosbie’s House would be in the way. I can see both sides on this one. Don’t think they should go mad with CPO’s though.
On a side note has anybody noticed the refurbished mill in the centre of the IAWS group on the other side of Pearse Street Bridge. Looks interesting – had heard that the rest of the mills were going to be turned into loft style apartments – anybody know anything on that one?
Rory W
ParticipantMy God everything is so clean there – really puts our filth in perspective!!
Rory W
ParticipantDoes anybody know what this topic is about?
Rory W
ParticipantAnybody else think that we could have made more of a statement by spending £43 Million on a totally modern contempory style building to act as guest house to world leaders. It would have been a lot more interesting I think?!?!?

ParticipantWhat ever my musical tastes may be, it doesn’t change the fact that places like smithfield should have things running in it all the time. If the corpo had the resources to devote to having concerts like David Gray and Buena Vista Social Club and whatever takes your fancy, people would moan saying it was a “waste of resources and could we not spend it on a new cats home or something” I do not know where half this town gets its idea of civic pride.
So you cant really blame the corpo handing it over to a private company to run.
Nation of begrudgers !!! We invented it
PS James: My friends down in Smithfield Village were going to have a party the night of the David Gray concert, so instead of enjoying a Glass of Wine and dinner before the concert I had to make do with the old plastic glass of Heineken and some half cooked chips. Not everyone in Smithfield wanted the concert called off!
Rory W
ParticipantThe reason that the Meeting House Square events are blocked off like that is for crowd control reasons only. Could you imagine being at a film screening on a Saturday night only to have a bunch of English lads on a Stag weekend running through the place Lager in Hand and shouting En-ger-lund!! You can get the free tickets for these events from the TBP offices on Eustace Street.
As for Smithfield square – grrrr 1 and 3/4 hours it took to get from Abbey Street to Marlay Park by special (roasting hot) Dublin Bus on Thursday 19th July to go and see David Gray. Compared to the 25 minutes walk from the IFSC.
I have no problem with large civic areas being used for pay concerts. Most cities have such event in such places. We have too much of a Nimby attitude in this country.
Smithfield square should have things running in it constantly – and not that 1-step-from-the-glue-factory nagfest once a month. Civic squares should be in use constantly (see anywhere on the continent for numeous examples) and not the windswept piazzas that we have at present.
Rory W
ParticipantOh and incentives for owner occupiers of these large size apartments (that should kick start the apartment market again).
Rory W
ParticipantKefu hit the nail on the head – what we need is decent sized apartments suitable for family living (at normal pricing). I mean who wouldnt like to live in an Apartment like Fraiser’s or the purple one in Friends (I know its fictional but aspirational too).
Rory W
ParticipantNo haven’t considered Journalism thanks.
OK we do need a suitable venue for events but do we need to spend a billion on it. We must seriously examine why it costs £1 billion when they can build a stadium to host the world cup finals in Korea for $85 million. No doubt it is the “consultancy fees”.
I agree that Dublin is a beautiful city, but it is in dire need of (1) Cleaning (2) Educating people to respect the city environment (3) Traffic calming (4) Improving street funiture (5) Quality control in terms of new buildings – the government could lead by example (6) Better policing especially traffic and littering (8) Public transport (9) New streets and areas opened up. etc etc.
Laissez-faire economics do not work in this country as the developers are allowed to build basically whatever they want so long as it is made of Brick and has a clocktower or some other cheesy gimmick like that – the Government could spend a billion on quality Architectually designed buildings and lead by example. I just think it would produce a better environment for all the people.
We must question the costings on this thing (£300 from everyone in the state).
In terms of asking the 2.3 Billion Chinese, if the man on the street there were not to 100% endorse the olympics they would probably be shot. The olympics is only going to be a big party for the Communist Party faithful – if you beleive it will make the place any better for the average joe, good luck to you.
We want a big stadium just like every other Banana republic.
Rory W
ParticipantWe don’t need this overblown heap of shite out in Blanchardstown. Wouldn’t it be better if they spent the 1 billion plus money on making Dublin a beautiful city, with beautiful buildings and environments. A billion pounds could make the docklands an amazing place.
Lets face it – whio goes to Paris to look at (and not attend an event in) Stade de France?
