I think it stems from Dublin Bus using Phibsboro on its old “Via” sign

Hopefully when the Luas and Metro stations get built (hope my grandchildren enjoy it)they will be of a decent design. We have the opportunity to create something distinctive along the lines of the Art Deco Metropolitan in Paris or the Underground in London. Its the little touches that make the difference!

May I refer you to my rant in the Dublin problems section of this site in terms of current government policy

    Ah yes comittees.

    Delaying tactics more like

I remember going to the concluding report of the Dublin Transportation Initiative in Trinity College in 1991 (I think – could have been even earlier) and it ahd all the strategies layed out – port tunnel, Luas, QBC, reopening of old rail lines (Navan, Harcourt street etc spurs to Tallaght off the Kildare line, Blanchardstown off the Sligo line, the Kildare line to go under the Phoenix park and terminate in Connolly). Absolutely everything.

How much of this has happened – half arsed conversion of the Kildare line, painfully slow progress on both the Luas and the Port Tunnel, and a few QBCs. Twelve years or so later. I know Rome wasn’t built in a day but how did we get to the situation that we are in?

Simple answer – procrastination on the part of the Politicians – if the will was there to do it, then it would have been done years ago. A lá emergency legislation for Larry Goodman etc done in a matter of hours. I see Minister O’Rourke wants the Navan (Broadstone) line reopened – this was suggested in the comprehensive survey by the DTI. Yet the insists we need another committee to decide on this – then probably a public inquiry. Why not JUST DO IT? This will hold things up for at least 3 years. By Which time we will be heading towards another election.

The only solution is to create an infrastructure agency that is independent from the corrupt/inept world of Irish politics.

I see that they are currently boring holes outside this place (for a crane?) and that the conversion work has begun.

Well theve started to gut it, all the windows are gone and its being stripped down to a shell at the moment – worth a photo even if to say “Never again”.

With Hawkins House about to get revamped as well this area is definitely starting to improve.

(Ok just getting use to this icon stuff)

PDVZ can I join you in your utopian society? If you did remove the railings from around the Bank of Ireland on College Green those lovely porticos would be filled with the usual winos and down & outs that unfortunately cover our streets with cardboard every night. Ever gone by the Customs House at night lovely place filled with heroin addicts and piss flowing everywhere. Also if you notice the area inside the raillings of the Banak of Ireland is one of th few places in the city not covered in Chewing Gum stains (the scourge of the streets) perhaps when Joe Soap Dubliner has enough respect for their city and environment then we could open up areas to them.

Just came back from Brussells, where they actually look after the homeless – only saw one person out begging during a week there – perhaps we could follow the continental model (rather than the f*** ’em US model)

Downstairs in the Spy club in the Powerscourt Centre South William Street – behind the pool table – I think they open at 5pm access from the street. Don’t remember the holograms though…

Beware of the “sniffy” door policy – this place is a competitor of Lillies Bordello.

They have almost finished repaving the area from the spire site down towards Easons, nothing else seems to have been done (esp the Anna Livia).

Why dig it up in the first place if all they were going to do is repave now before digging it up again and then repave again

From the Irish Times Breaking News section

Westmoreland St may be cut to two lanes

Dublin Corporation has approved in principal plans reducing Westmoreland Street from five lanes of traffic to two and a reduction to one-lane traffic at the Bank of Ireland.

Chairman of Dublin Corporation’s traffic and transport committee Councillor Eamonn Ryan also said there should be an immediate ban on turning left from Westmoreland Street onto Aston Quay.

The turning is a notorious black spot where a cyclist died on Tuesday and another was killed in the summer.

The new plan is part of Dublin Corporation’s traffic and transport policy. It includes the creation of two cycle-lanes, one a contra-flow lane running from O’Connell Bridge along Westmoreland Street to College Green.

A pedestrian traffic island, similar to the ones on O’Connell Bridge and College Green has also been planned for the street.

The plans, originally drawn up by Dutch consultants, are at the final design stage and are expected to be completed in six to eight months.

Cllr Ryan said the main problem is the number of heavy-goods vehicles in the the city centre. Most cycling accidents involve a truck.

Other plans being considered by the corporation include stopping trucks from leaving Dublin Port during rush hours and sending trucks out of the city in early-morning convoys.

Sorry Bit vague – but where the Wolfe Tone Memorial is the open semicircular area is blocked off with Hoardings and there seems to be a lot of builders materials there.

Yep – lansdowne own all the land around and there was the plan to turn the Stadium 90 degrees a few years ago. If they go to Blanchardstown with the stadium all the pagentry and tradition will be lost. As the Guardian says one of the best pleasures is the journey to the game – the fact that you can walk from St Stephens green and there are pubs along the way. If you have to drive to the stadium you (a) will have huge jams to sit in (b) will not have a drink because you are driving – this in turn will lead to a loss of the good natured cameraderie and will make the entire event sterile and bland.

We are not like English Soccer Fans, we don’t get legless and start a fight – part of the tradition of going to a match is to have a few drinks before and after with your friends (a lot of whom you do not get the chance to meet otherwise). If this is the case its yet another sign of the world becoming more anti social.

Sorry about the rant but I really feel that this is important.

Yep and wouldnt we all be better off if they renovated Lansdowne Road instead. No rugby fan in their right mind wants a stadium in one of the most inaccessable parts of Dublin. Lansdowne is a perfect site – just like Murrayfield – 25 minutes walk from the centre of town, DART access – sure you may not be able to park close to the place but maybe the 10 minute walk will do you good.
