ParticipantCIE isn’t the main problem its union intransegence who go on strike at the drop of a hat, wont operate the centre doors (as part of an ongoing dispute) and as for smokers upstairs that’s a problem due to the anti-social element that seem sto be taking hold in Ireland at the moment who intimidate everyone else and get their own way.
Yes there are problems with CIE, but they are not the main cause

ParticipantWent to the aquatic centre – aka. Lansowne Road on Saturday, the cries of shut the stadium roof were heard – nice thought!!!

ParticipantI think that before we run we should learn to walk – the existing train lines (see rants passim) need new rolling stock etc (I’m heading down to connolly to get a train that was built in the 1950s) so before we get Mag Trains, some ordinary ones would do nicely!!

ParticipantProbably not floodlit due to the chequer-board look that it has since the stonework was patched up

ParticipantHooray for Bono and his pals getting space for free at one of the most important sites in Dublin – that’ll do his ego no harm…

ParticipantWell technically its a lot older than Victorian although that is when Lord Ardilaun formalised the park and opened it to the city, however given the fact that 2 sides (south and west) of it are now surrounded with modern buildings I dont believe it works as a square (eg Merrion and Fitzwilliam).
There is however an issue here where we keep looking back to the past for our street furniture/buildings and creating a pastiche of what was there before – if this was always the case we’d still have open gas braziers (not the smithfield ones mind you).

ParticipantI trhink its some “constitutional right” to allow citzens to make money legitimately (Dev knew f-all about how this would effect the aesthetics of O’Connell street though)

ParticipantKeep taking the pills…

ParticipantNah Mussolini gets my vote, less dodgy than Mitterand…
Rory W
ParticipantI think something modern would have looked good for the lamp standards rather than the recycling, but just an opinion…

ParticipantExcise walk – the gap between the Clarion Hotel and the branch of Milano pizzaria. Went past it myself the other day, looks naff, like some knid of dogems track
Rory W
ParticipantAh Greg, come on the Roche plan was cack as well, a bit of soul less downtown Houston decends on the north inner city. STWs plans could have been better though…
Rory W
ParticipantNo government has the balls to do anything with infrastructure – they just keep farming it out to cosultants to look at whilst the price skyrockets. Any fool could tell you you need to bypass bottlenecks on roads, its just common sense. What do the palanning department of the Department of Transport do all day?
To the government I challenge you – come on build the motorways – build the rail lines you have a fucking 20 seat majority what more do you want???
Rory W
Participantand th bullshit that they haven’t had an increase in years – Drogheda fares went up 10% in September – another 9% to be added to this??? Grand total 19%, official rate of inflation 4.2% (and most people’s cost of living salary increases) as they say in the States – you do the math!!
Rory W
ParticipantActually looking at ther book of estimates (sounds biblical doesn’t it) and given our financial situation the country could and should borrow a few billion to invest in infrastructure -not wages, health, social welfare etc – infrastructure alone. Theres should be an infrastructure agency created as well. Although this would involve thing beyond the next five minutes…

ParticipantOh sweet jesus – why not have life sized quiet man statues (no doubt being harassed by the Black n’ tans or some such) and be done with the whole thing
Rory W
ParticipantI’ll fetch my pipe and slippers ;->

ParticipantThanks Paul!!!
Ah the EBS building… ok what happened was that the EBS had offices on the corner of Wesmoreland street and an fleet street and decided to replace them with something more modern. They brought in the ever reliable Sam Stephenson who designed the building around reusing the facade of the Paradiso restaurant (the white bit in the middle where the entrance is) and with blackened glass curtain walling around both sides of this. When the first (south) phase was being built the council realised what the EBS were building (“diabolical black box” was the phase of the day) and then insisted in the second (northern phase “incoroporating solid elements”. Hence the wonderful lopsided mess we see today.
Rory W
ParticipantHope so Greg – if not we’ll end up with the usual lop sided mess that we get as a “compromise” in this country – see the EBS HQ on Westmoreland Street for example of compromise.
The Sindo is really gone shite these days – you could tell the article was written by trained chimps starved of light/food, and as for Brendan O’Connor – please give up the day job. The Sunday Times “Sue Denham” column had a much better piece reflecting the fact that the Green Party protestwas a “tawdry stunt” and had an accompanying cartoon of someone chainsawing through the legs of a protestor as they felled a tree. Also reflected Paul’s “call to arms” about going down there armed with chainsaws.
(Note: anything said about the Sindo etc is “in my opinion” so don’t get too excited legal watchers)
