Apologies for this folks but since I was called “Childish” I think I should respond

Ciaran, when I was accused of being Anti-British (for mentioning the fact that the city went into decline after the act of Union) I was mearly stating a historic fact. If the city did not decline in importance and I had said that it had, and blamed the British for this, this I would have been expressing an anti-British sentiment. I mearly stated a fact.

My second point was that we are culturally influenced by our nearest neighbour – to deny that this is the case is wrong. For me personaly to be anti-British, without acknowledging the daily impact that Britain has on our lives is hypocritical. I believe in treating the UK as an equal partner in Europe, not a former coloniser, an equal and as such we should not defer to anyone. I am not nor never plan to be neither pro nor anti British.

I welcome the fact that we are influenced by probably all European cultures, long may it continue, and long may we continue to influence other European cultures.

I have no interest in the continuence of this argument as it is futile.

Now – I hope that clears everything up and we can get back to discussing architecture.

A modest proposal from myself to the government at €0 cost in consultancy fees from myself

    1) run line starting from former Carlton Cinema underground to Broadstone (see attachment MP2 in next response)

    2) Use old Navan line out in a loop via Finglas to the Airport

3 Continue the line via Swords to Balbriggan where people coming from the Northern part of the country could get the airport link

Speaking of paving – does anyone else feel that the red brick and faux-victorian lights in Grafton Street looks tired given how well the green now looks?

It’s a simple fact that once the act of union took place Dublin was about as important to the Empire as Bradford, just another provincial town. The town stagnated and declined. Nothing Anti-British in that, it’s just a fact.

I, like many Irish people, shop at Tescos and Marks & Spencer, watch BBC, read The Sunday Times, and support an English Premiership team to be anti-British would just be hypocritical. We are always going to be influenced by our nearest neighbour.

The replacement of the old lights with Halogen lights, new bright stone pavements and the new trees has made a huge difference – the place feels very cosmopolitan and reminds me of continental european cities

Aierlan – surely Dublin of the 18th century before the Act of Union, when it was the second city of the Empire, would be preferable – the 19th century did very little for Dublin outside of your examples (during the 19th century the excellent Gardiner began to fall into decline)

    Of two recent points

The eyelets are to radiate light (via i think 70,000 LEDS) and the contractors (McNally’s) do not mind the delay in construction (they say they are getting wonderful publicity for it) and have waived any overrun costs for the crane.

Good on them, quite civic minded wouldn’t you say

Alas, due to the windy weather it’s off until the weekend, still better late than never.

How about declaring it a national monument – thereby anyone who defaces it could be up for a major fine/prison.

So if you want to identify archeire contributors simply look for chaps taking photos at lunchtime (I’ll be the one in the navy overcoat!!!) Should we all wear carnations to allow for easy identification? 🙂

As regards Arnotts Car Park exit I have to agree – who would have thought the Adephi Cinema lobby could be so menacing.

It looks dreadful though – a gaping hole in the facade, how they got away with it I dont know – and as was previously mentioned its a real menace to pedestrians – so kind of control/barrier is needed there

Was down there at 8 – looking good, will head down again at lunchtime to see the 4th section hopefully in place.

Speaking of things appearing all of a sudden – the top section of the Crysler Building in New York appeared in 1 day and that surprised a lot of people!!!

Actually, if the Indo wanted a better Dublin they could start by redeveloping their own, now defunct, printing buildings on (1) Abbey Street Next to Chapters (look for the place with the huge shutters and youv’e found it) and Princes Street North (down by the GPO Arcade) that could be made into a very pleasant area

    The vista
    (a) was designed to terminate at Connolly – I’m assuming you are saying the Victorians ruined this by building the section of the loop-line bridge in front of this rather than the building itself which is quite fine
    (b) would have been disrupted by the pillar 1806 – 1966
    (c) the Georgian Mile (Leeson Street Bridge to Holles Street hospital is a much finer vista (although blighted somewhat by ESB HQ)
    (d) Henry Moore Earl of Drogheda would have been more upset at the fact that Drogheda Street was ripped apart by Gardiner!

Sorry to be a pedant but…

To the topic in hand – does anyone know then the next section is scheduled to go up – I assume it wont be this week given the expected windy weather?

Better enforcement of the rules would make more sense. Junctions get blocked because twats drive into yellow boxes – if they crucified these guys things would move better. Also deliveries – especially draymen delivering beer – this shoul be carried out between 4 and 7 am not during the day, apologies for anybody who misses out on sleep but tough. Finally – roadworks the tender should be won by whoever can complete the task as quicky and with as little disruption as possible, not just who can do the job cheapest.

Another section going up today (6th Jan) really looking forward to seeing it – however be warned!!! That Ukrainian emigre artist woman (the one who wanted the reconstruction of the Nelson Pillar with a giant golden globe on top) is posing as a journalist and doing vox-pops of her own. If she doesn’t like what you say (i.e. if you actually like the Spire) she gets into a shouting match with you saying “you know nothing about art….” sore loser or just plain nuts?
