ParticipantThats the reason according to a friend who works in that building.
I think there is some kind of cable structure being built for the new stand at Dundalk racecourse – I’ll take a look next time I’m passing

ParticipantI’d well believe it – I think one of the senators was calling for an enquiry into the price of drink after being charged €11.10 for a rum and coke in the Earl of Kildare (nee Powers) Hotel – their reason being “it’s after 11pm”. Amazing how these things are only noticed when somebody ventures outside the (subsidised) Dail bar.
Incidently €5.15 for an Erdinger in Ron Blacks – not even two pints for a tenner anymore!
Rory W
ParticipantAnd don’t forget the old Forsyth & Forsyth furniture shop which is currently going through the planning process for a JD Weatherspoons pub – hooray for warm beer – but at least it will be €2 a pint which cant be bad in counteracting the pub price inflation problem.
Rory W
ParticipantI can’t see it happening though – wonderful idea that it is – The ST are always reporting these wonderful things that never seem to materialise, so don’t hold your breath.
On the other hand there will be the predictable outcry of ‘waste of money’ from those with a lack of vision.. what about the health service/refugees/homeless/eldery (delete as applicable).

ParticipantIts the door to where they keep the tortured soles of the Accountants.
The building that was there before KPMG/Stokes Place was the original Russell Court Hotel – which was a favorite haunt of the Ansbacher brigade, with its fine wines and top cuisine (very much the Patrick Guibauds of its day) – I was hoping they’d dig up a wine cellar which had been forgotten about but…

ParticipantIs it the busiest street in Dublin? I would say that on a footfall basis Henry Street or Grafton Street. Oxford street is not the most dangerous street in London, the Champs or Hausmann in Paris is not either cities most dangerous streets, yet probably their busiest.
And there is a hell of a lot of criminal behaviour goes on on O’Connell Street – muggings, mindless violence, drug dealing, Harassment – so yes it probably is the most dangerous street in Ireland.
Rory W
ParticipantHate to be pedantic about these things but the derelict site on O’Connell Street was occupied by a branch of Penny’s and not Aer Lingus – burnt down the same weekend the Pope visited Ireland (1979) fact fans – yes gaping hole on “main street Ireland” for almost 25 years – should probably organise a celebration of the anniversary or something
Rory W
ParticipantHarcourt Street “Georgian” well there is only about four original georgians left there. The rest are all facades with modern office behind
Rory W
ParticipantAnn Summers does not have “dildos in the window” – just lingerie, and as such it is probably one of the classiest shops on O’Connell St – pity about the naff signage though
Rory W
ParticipantA gravel path – here in the middle of the city – in this weather? (to be said in 13th Duke of Wimden voice)
Nah the new path, trees, halogen lamps look great – well done opw.
Now if we could just shoot people that spat out chewing gum on it….

ParticipantAs someone who commutes to Lansdowne from Drogheda for games I don’t see Niall’s point on “D4 bashing” part of the charm of the game is the Lansdowne walk – i.e. the stroll (and its pubs) from the city centre – the fans love it (both Irish and International) and is part of the day out (both soccer and rugby). Niall – the FAI also wanted Lansdowne road so its not just an IRFU thing
Sitting in traffic just to experience the game and no more out at Abbotstown would be no fun at all. The right decision was made – ask any fan.
P.S. RTE does a great job given their limited budget. Look at TV3 – live from the glamourous environs of Ballymount Industrial estate and the poxy job that they do given the (unlimited) pockets of Granada and CanWest.

ParticipantThe Millenium Stadium can accomodate 70,000 and is on a similar sized tight site in downtown Cardiff – why cant Lansdowne Niall?
Rory W
ParticipantDoes anybody else find the schizophrenic nature of this building disturbing – refined elevation to the campus – sheer inaccesible almost anti urban skewed walls onto Nassau St???.
Trinity – Insular – Never!!!
Rory W
ParticipantIt looks like the base section had a mirrored effect to the whole thing, but somebody peeled most of it off and we were left with a few mangy bits stuck to the base.
A blind, drunk, child could have done better – it spoils the whole thing

ParticipantThe Drogheda Grammer School was on St Laurences Street. If you know the town it’s the street leading from West Street – the main shopping street – up the hill towards St Laurences Gate (the sole remaining gate from when Drogheda was a walled town). The site is near the gate on the right hand side.
Rory W
ParticipantBut good news in Drogheda as the illegally demolished Grammer School is being rebuild (albeit as part of a shoping scheme)

ParticipantOh God – I just saw the dreaded window in Leinster House – last one on the right in the main block on the ground floor. What are they thinking.
Why can’t the Unionists get Hillsborough’s windows sorted out. After all they’re always singing about The Sash…..
Sorry

ParticipantActually the Department of Finance logic is even more simple than that – the books must be in surplus at the end of the year and I will never borrow. That’s what you get when you stick a narrow minded accountant in as head man at the dept – no long term thinking/planning. Typically conservative Irish. But we’re worse for taking it
Rory W
ParticipantWoo-hoo 50 pages

ParticipantI think the gas building will be no doubt be chopped up and ruined by whatever Trinity does to it – I think the ground floor would have made an interesting restaurant but alas… I don’t see public access to the ground floor being allowed for shame.
What will happen to the barrel vault in AIB Foster place, will public access be lost here too?
