I see that O’ Reilly’s Bar under Tara St Station is closing pending renovations to the station. Tenders are being sought for all the fixtures and fittings. Does this mean. I wonder, if the full redevelopment is going ahead???I think so – there is a lot of work that is being done to the station for the DASH plan, and I believe this has to be carried out before they start work on the main bulk of the building programme. I lookforward to the reopening of O’Reillys (planned to go on the top floor of the new building)

ParticipantMy guess is that nothing is being done to Pearse until the whole Trinity/IM Pei plan is acted on or layed to rest – no point in doing the place up if they are going to rip it apart again

ParticipantSimilarities between Taney and Boyne Bridges – Boyne bridge is about 4 times the size of the Taney bridge. Althogh both very impressive, the Boyne bridge is just fantastic – and Drogheda has lost a most of its thru traffic which is great.
Bridge looks great in the distance as you approach from the Slane/Drogheda Road.
As for Frazer Agnew’s cutural vandalism comment – hes just annoyed that poor Mick down south can get to his border quicker, it’s well enough away from the battle of the boyne site (not that there is a vast amount to see there). Akin to someone complaining about a development in Fairview damaging the Battle of Clontarf site!

ParticipantThere is a new bus shelter similar in style to the taxi shelters (but is definitely a bus shelter) going up outside the eircom HQ on St Stephens green – the shape of things to come? Lets hope so

ParticipantDidin’t the building next door (next to the Unicef shop) mysteriously burn down though?

ParticipantDrinking in a car park is (a) illegal and (b) were you at Ireland V Argentina last year? It pissed like a monsoon for the entire game and people were delighted to get indoors to have a few whiskeys after the game. Why have 2 large stadia? Because one of them is a closed shop?
Isn’t it more civilised that we can walk to the game from the centre of our capital city?
Rory W
ParticipantBecause you’ll have great craic sitting in the M50 traffic jam?

ParticipantOK look at a map of Ireland – where do all the rail lines lead to – Dublin. Where does the main roads in the country run to – Dublin. What is the capital of Ireland and has over 1/3 of its population – you’ve guessed it Dublin. My point is the infrastructure is just not there to support putting the stadium elsewhere in the country.
I suppose that as a rugby fan I have sentimental attachment to Lansdowne – but it really is a very handy place to get to. It takes 20 minutes to walk to from Stephen’s Green. As for building apartments etc on its site – does Dublin really need more souless apartments in D4 that you or I can never afford. No I don’t think so.
Do we need an 80,000 seat venue at Lansdowne – for maybe Ireland V England once every 2 years. But it’s no way near full now for Ireland V Italy (capacity 48,000) another 6 Nations games so I think 65,000 is enough (eircom park was only going to be 45,000 which the FAI were happy with). If you get the chance go to the Millenium Stadium in Cardiff and see what that is like (its practically in the middle of the city) and compare it with out of town stadia elsewhere.
Do you think the GAA would have built their stadium anywhere other than Croke park?
Build it and build it at Lansdowne!

ParticipantAmerican embassy ok, but the British embassy? it looks like a glorified fire station

ParticipantStephen C – I have one word for you “Ryanair”.

ParticipantI remember reading that in the Indo property section last year so I assume that’s the case

ParticipantHere is the weatherspoon website in their design section. To be fair they seem to see design and conservation as part of what they do so fair play to them. And yes – no music allowed, and I didn’t see any of the fruit machines (I’m not sure if they are legal in pubs here anymore).

PS: I have heard it reported that the pint price for Ireland will be €2, so nothing wrong with that.
Rory W
ParticipantWell thats what I heard when I asked about it.
FYI – The Drogheda by-pass should be open after the June bank holiday weekend and the local rotary club are organising a walk across the bridge day in the coming weeks. The bridge itself is being illuminated and looks spectacular when lit at night (they were testing the ligts a few weeks ago).
Some info on the story is available from the Drogheda Independent – http://www.unison.ie/drogheda_independent/stories.php3?ca=40&si=974986&issue_id=9206
