ParticipantAs an experienced PR man I’d say these articles have all the hallmarks of the car lobby in this country (not to name names but we all know who these people are)

ParticipantI see from the Irish Times today that the consortium is headed up by the man that brought you (1) Wicklow Springs bottling plant – built without planning permission and (2) Haunted House – failed reality show which was not aired at its intended time on TV3 due to ‘payment problems’ and went out months later with little or no fanfare.
So I suppose we’ll see this go the way of the “Sacred Heart City” disappearing like a Cheshire Cat without even a grin

Participantof course – if a luas was to be put down the street now would be the time to prepare the site for this – but will they? Will they f***

ParticipantIts nothing to do with the current Government…. or any government. Its a Local Authority issue
On one level true – that it is down to local authorities to implement, however the mindset of central government does trickle down to local authorities (don’t forget the dual mandate existed until recently) and the mindset of the current government is to legislate for everything but don’t provide any support to back up the legislation e.g. are we the only country in the world who would bring in penalty points for a raft of offences without a traffic corps to back it up? Banning skating in public without providing skateparks is the same

ParticipantOscar Wilde statue is great it really suits the character of Wilde. The same applies to the Joyce statue on Noth Earl Street and Kavanagh on his bench (appropriate for Kavanagh). But Behan on a bench is a no-no.
What next a statue of Sean O’Casey on a bench outside the Abbey, or Bram Stoker on a bench at Marino! Show some imagination folks.
This is turning into a Cow-parade of poets

ParticipantI wouldn’t take it personally – its just that the current government are so PC and regressive that they are currently banning everything – skating, smoking, drinking late on Thursdays, fat taxes, etc etc.
That said, cycling on the pavement and jay-walking are both illegal as well, but I saw both on the way to work today
Rory W
ParticipantWhat a dull derivative idea. Give him a statue holding a pint outside Gills on the North Circular (or are we to give in to the PC brigade – don’t want to encourage drinking do we)
Rory W
ParticipantNo its that one that got permission

ParticipantFourth Image – similar shot taken from one of the office buildings. You get to see the full lenght of the glazed extension on this

ParticipantHope my DNA doesn’t look like that
This weeks t-shirt slogan ” I like (the) Spike”

ParticipantOh yes agree about Lucinda Lambton – I was wondering when she would turn up. Fortunately she isn’t one of the hosts as in “one foot in the past”. I know the show is an example of dumbed down television but (cue Reithian voice) at least its getting architecture and conservation out to the masses.
New to BBC this autumn – “I’m a celebrity architect, engage my services” – Rogers, Gerhy, Libeskind and Foster are locked in a studio for four weeks to design wobbly buildings/Gerkins/bridges etc at the end of each week one of them is voted out by the public – the winner gets his monument constructed by Ant and Dec and some chimps in the jungle of south America. Whats not to love about this idea – glamourous location, public votes, animals, cheeky chaps Ant and Dec. Can I have my £50 grand now please.

ParticipantPerhaps Rory’s drunken building is as it is because it follows the plot layout of the original buildings on the street.
Now that was a silly idea if that is the case considering every other building on the street follows a straight building line – it works ok on Stephens Green west as some of the original buildings remained – but this is just silly.
Re the niches on Jervis street, windows were due to be put into them under the Sam Stephenson redevelopment plan (with BT style awnings) – dont know if this is the plan for here

ParticipantAs a youth I climbed Connolly’s Folly, there is a stairway on one of the arches – sometimes the door was open – facinating place. Mariga Guinness (of Irish Georgian Soc and 50 Mountjoy Square fame) is buried under one of the other wings (don’t ask me how they got permission for that).
I knew some people who lived in one of the wings of Castletown as caretakers before it was taken over by the OPW – alas they got the boot. What’s wrong with people living in houses?

ParticipantThat show seems to have captured the imagination in the UK and appearently there are a load of volunteers offering there help on some of the buildings featured.
My girlfriend and I were watching the show last night, she asked who were the two presenters (outside of Gryff) I said one was an architect and the other a building historian – she heard Ptolemy speak and instantly said “he’s the architect”. Then I told her his name was Ptolemy…(cue eyes to heaven).
The Northern Ireland on is this Friday 22nd at 9pm BBC 2.

ParticipantSpeaking of the Penny’s extension, can anyone in their right mind explain the way the extension staggers drunkenly along Jervis street. Did someone in the City Council decide that there wasn’t enough corners along this street for drunks to urinate into or something?
I was wondering if you put “Stena Line” on the side of the Roches building would it look like something had docked there

ParticipantThe number 90 which joins Heuston and Connolly stops either side of O’Connell Bridge linking the transport hubs with the central shopping areas. There was a 91(?) bus that used to link Heuston with Stephen’s Green but since I don’t live out west no more I couldn’t tell you if its still going. There is also the Museum link buses between Collin’s barracks and Kildare Street
But sure won’t it be grand when the Luas is running

ParticipantFormerly a Tea Room and Toilets block with Kiosk shop ( only the Kiosk is still in operation)

ParticipantJesus I’d love to be forced to bring up my kids in Clarion Quay – but maybe I wouldn’t let them ruin someone elses peace. It’s a case of blaming architecture for bad parenting – if you want to keep an eye on the little dears take them around to the playground around the corner and watch them there rather than keeping one eye on them while you watch “trisha” or whatever.
True – they should have pelican crossings on Mayor Street but in reality it is no more dangerous than any other street in the area
